Albertus
Brandner
Dec 10, 1921 — Feb 15, 2011
Albertus "Bert" Brandner, 89, of Herreid, SD, died February 15, 2011 at the Selby Good Samaritan Center, Selby, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am Friday, February 18, 2011 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Herreid, SD with Fr. Thomas Clement officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at the church in Herreid with a prayer service at 7:00pm and will continue for 1 hour before the services on Friday. Bert was born on December 10, 1921 on a farm near Herreid, SD, the son of Joe and Mary E. (Heid) Brandner. He was the second oldest of seven children. He grew up on his parent's family farm. Bert worked in the Civilian Conservation Corp. at Custer and as a welder at the Boeing Air Craft Company in Seattle, WA. He also worked at the Kaiser Shipyards in Portland, OR. Bert served two years in the army during World War II, and in Japan following the war. Bert married Elvera Holzworth on October 14, 1947 in Herreid, SD. They lived on a farm twelve miles northeast of Herreid until 1952 when they moved to the former Joe Brandner farm three miles northeast of Herreid. Bert and Elvera retired in 1986 and moved to Herreid. Bert never turned down a good (or bad) pinochle game, and his sons tried, to no avail, to beat him for almost 50 years. He was very kind, humorous and an overly generous man, who will be missed by all who knew him. Bert died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at the Good Samaritan Society Nursing Home in Selby, SD after a brief stay. He is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law: Terry Brandner of Wall, SD, Tom and Laurie Brandner of Pierre, SD and Tim and Shelly Brandner of Bismarck, ND; seven grandchildren: Andrea, Pamela, Amy, Drew, Justin, Jared and Jaden; three great-grandchildren: Jamie, Danielle and MacKenzie and a special friend, Dorothy Klaudt of Mound City, SD; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Clem and Angie Brandner of Bismarck, ND, Walter and Marianne Brandner of Dell Rapids, SD; four sisters: Genevieve Kightlinger of Selby, SD, Lois Seiler of Herreid, SD, Florence Wittmeier of Herreid, SD, and Betty Senftner of Herreid, SD. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe and Mary, his wife, Elvera, and an infant son.
