Obituary

Alice Van Beek DeBoer, 90, formerly of Westfield, died April 22, 2011 in Bismarck. Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Monday, April 25, 2011 at Hope Reformed Church, Westfield, ND with the Reverend Lane Keister officiating. Burial will be in the Westfield Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 5:00pm to 9:00pm at the Myers Funeral Home, Linton. There will be a prayer service at 5:00pm. Visitation will continue for one hour before the services on Monday at the church. Alice was born October 2, 1920, to John and Agnes Van Soest on a farm between Strasburg and Hague. Her mother passed away when she was one and her stepmother, Hannah Heyerman, raised her. She graduated from a one room country school house. On December 26, 1945, she married Eddie Van Beek. They farmed near Westfield until 1981 when they moved into their new home in Westfield. Eddie passed away in 1991. Ten years later Alice married Herbert DeBoer and moved to Linton. He passed away in 2004. Alice then moved into an apartment in Strasburg. Alice was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was an active member of the Hope Reformed Church. She served as the president of RCW, taught Sunday school, and helped in the kitchen. As correspondent of the local newspapers, she wrote the Westfield news. It was her pleasure to care for people of all ages. This included her parents, her daughter Beth, her friends who were ill, grandchildren and neighbor children. Alice loved games like Scrabble and crocheted many afghans and doilies for family and friends. She also enjoyed quilting. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Kathee Van Beek, Westfield, ND; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Doug Schelhaas, Bismarck, ND; Shirlene and Terry Serr, Hazelton, ND. ten grandchildren: Brant Schelhaas, Nancy Shirley, Jayna Wiens, Karen Hostetter, Tena Senger, Aaron Van Beek, Levi Van Beek, Rachel Dykema, Craig Serr and Alison Randle; seventeen great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Betty Pudwill, Herreid, SD; and Nancy Van Soest, Strasburg, ND; and Jeanette Van Beek, Hazel Crest, IL; A stepson, JC and Sandy DeBoer, Linton, ND. She was preceded in death by her husbands, her daughter Beth Louise, her parents, her grandson Stephen Van Beek, her great grandson Bryant Schelhaas, her brothers Henry and Martin Van Soest, her sister Anna Glazer.
