Alton Heinrich, 78, Herreid, SD passed away November 24, 2014 at the Strasburg Care Center, Strasburg, ND. Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at First Baptist Church, Herreid, SD, with Rev. Brandon Jones officiating. Inurnment will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Herreid. Military Honors provided by American Legion Post #170. Memorials may be directed to the American Legion Post #170, PO Box 21, Herreid, SD, in Alton's name. Alton was born in a sod house on June 1, 1936, in Mound City, S.D. to John and Christina (Beck) Heinrich. Alton lost his mother when he was eight years old and his father at the age of fourteen. He then lived with his Grandmother Rosina (Kary) Heinrich while he attended school in Herreid. During the summer months, he lived with Bennie and Margaret Goehring. Alton graduated from Herreid High School in 1955.Shortly after graduating, Alton enlisted in the army. He served proudly from 1960 to 1963, at which time he was honorable discharged.Throughout his life Alton had many different jobs. He worked as a hired hand for farmers in the area, worked for Rieker Electric, and was involved with the Green Thumb Program helping out at the Herreid School and Good Samaritan nursing home.Alton was such a great handyman. He enjoyed helping many people in the community with anything that needed to be fixed. Alton was a great friend to many and will be greatly missed. Shortly before Alton's passing he was baptized. He now is able to be reunited with his family. He has missed his parents, grandparents, and infant sister, Cornelia, for many years.
