Anna Madonna (Grismer) Hartze (80) of Zeeland, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family at the Strasburg Care Center on March 17, 2026. Visitation will be on Sunday, March 22, 2026 from 5 to 6 pm with the Prayer Service at 6 pm. Mass and Christian burial will be held on Monday, March 23, 2026 at 10:30 am and the burial at the Catholic cemetery. All services will be held at St Andrew's Catholic Church in Zeeland, ND.

Our mom was born August 27, 1945, on a farm near Hosmer, SD. Her parents were Frank and Magdalena (Fix) Grismer and she was the second youngest of ten children. She attended country school through the 8th grade. On June 23, 1964, she married our father, Antone Leo Hartze Sr, at St Augustine Catholic Church in Bowdle, SD. They made their home on the family farm southeast of Zeeland. Together they raised us nine children, had a busy dairy farm, growing crops, raising beef cattle, gardening, canning, etc. Mom and Dad continued to farm until 2001 when they retired and moved to Linton.

Mom relished everything about farm life, from raising and caring for animals, gardening, cooking, and canning. You could always hear her whistling and she said that was the secret to getting the job done quickly. She was patient, loving, and kind, and instilled in us a strong faith. Mom was truly beautiful, both inside and out. She always wore her hair so nice and made sure that she had her "eyebrows on" and her lipstick in her purse. One of her many legacies was her German cooking. She made the most incredible homemade buns and none of us can fully replicate it, but we can still "smell" how wonderful they were. Her greatest treasures were her children and loved everything about being a mother. Her grandchildren were absolutely adored and she always had special treats, movies, and her famous chocolate and strawberry milk drinks ready for them. Family gatherings were always a highlight. Sadly, we lost our Dad unexpectedly on January 15, 2005.

Mom continued to live in Linton. As time went on, she met Oscar "Swede" Carlson and they were married on April 12, 2009, at St Anthony Catholic Church in Linton, ND. A few years later, they sold the Linton house and moved down to his farm in Java, SD. Oscar passed away February 17, 2021 at the Bowdle nursing home. Thereafter, Mom lived in various locations with our family. In September 2019, the Strasburg Care Center became her new home where she remained until her passing.

Grateful to have shared in her life are her nine children (one son deceased), 21 grandchildren (one grandson deceased), and nine great grandchildren (with two more on the way). Her children: Maggie (Neal) Schumacher of Ellendale, ND, Antone Jr (Tasha) Hartze of Zeeland, ND, Andrew (deceased), Madonna (Mike) Volk of Fargo, ND, Malinda (Russell) Hulm of Hague, ND, Marlena (Tim) Kelsch of Linton, ND, Marietta (Rolly) Andresen of rural Fargo, ND, Maretta Hartze of Linton, ND, and Maranda Hartze Pithua of Hallsville, MO.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her son, her grandson, her second husband, her parents, and all nine of her siblings.

Special thanks to the wonderful staff at the Strasburg Care Center, to Father Shannon for the countless blessings, to her roommate Rose Hulm for her diligent bedside care, and to those who visited Mom throughout her years there. Our family will forever be grateful.
