Obituary

Arley Schmidt, 82, Hazelton, ND, died Monday, February 1, 2010 at the Linton Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 6, 2010 at St. Anthonys Catholic Church, Linton, ND with Rev. Gary Benz officiating. Burial will be held in the spring at St. Pauls Catholic Cemetery, Hazelton, ND. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, ND where there will be a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church on Saturday. Arley was born on March 5, 1927 to Harry and Anna (Schanlabor) Beastrom of Hazelton. Arley attended school in Hazelton, graduating from Hazelton High School in 1945. After graduation, Arley attended Valley City Teachers College for two summers, receiving her teachers standard certificate. She taught two years at Danbury Rural School from 1945 to 1947. In 1947, she worked at the Bank of Hazelton, where she met a returning WWII veteran, Edward Schmidt. Arley and Edward were married June 23, 1948. They farmed five miles northwest of Hazelton and Arley taught rural school for one year. Arley and Edward had nine children: Thomas, Paul, Nancy, Pamela, Mary, John, Mark, Beth and Jeanne. At the age of 40, Arley returned to college once their oldest, Thomas, went to college, and the youngest, Jeanne, entered kindergarten. Arley graduated from Mary College in 1971, with a degree in Elementary Education. Arley taught Title I at the Hazelton School for many years, retiring after 20 years of teaching. In 1995, Arley and Edward semi-retired and moved into Hazelton. They were members of the Hazelton Historical Society, American Legion, American Legion Auxiliary and Hazelton Senior Citizens, where Arley volunteered to cook meals for the community. Arley loved to cook, bake, quilt, garden, research family history and visit with family and friends. Survivors of the immediate family are her husband: Edward of Hazelton, ND; children (spouses): Thomas (Vicky) Schmidt of Hazen, ND, Nancy (Reed) Schnabel of New Rockford, ND, Pamela (Fred) Laquesta of Kansas City, MS, Mary Sybrandt (friend John Moore) of Hazelton, ND, John (Cindy) Schmidt of Hazelton, ND, Mark (Lori) Schmidt of Hazelton, ND, Beth (John) Cyganiewicz of Denver, CO, and Jeanne (Kyle) Frappier of McHenry, ND. The 17 grandchildren include Robyn Olson, Jennifer Schnabel, Matthew Lacuesta, Anne Fischer, Cory Sybrandt, Nathaniel Schmidt, Galen Schmidt, Caitlin Schmidt, William Schmidt, Braydon Schmidt, Taiya Schmidt, Samantha Carvin, Kala Cyganiewicz, Evan Cyganiewicz, Kallie Frappier, Klay Frappier and McKenna Frappier. The five great grandchildren include Patrick Cyganiewicz, Jaydon Carvin, Ethan Carvin, Eli Carvin and Eden Fischer. Arleys surviving brothers and sister include: Keith Beastrom of Conneaut, OH, Eldon (Darlene) Beastrom of Bismarck, ND, Renee (Jerry) Appert of Hazelton, ND and Wayne (Norma) Beastrom of Forest Lake, MN. Preceding Arley in death are one son, Paul Schmidt, and her parents, Harry and Anna Beastrom. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to Hazelton-Moffit-Braddock Dollars for Scholars.
