Arne Carlton Garnaas, 86, Linton, ND, formerly of rural Denbigh, ND, died Monday, March 21, 2016 at the Napoleon Care Center, Napoleon, ND. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 28, 2016 at Peace Lutheran Church, Linton, ND. Burial will be at 4:00 p.m. at Norway Lutheran Church Cemetery, Denbigh, ND. Visitation will be Sunday, March 27th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., at Myers Funeral Home, followed by prayer service at 7:00 p.m.Arne was born September 21, 1929, the son of Christen and Betsy (Rensla) Garnaas. Arne was baptized and confirmed at Norway Lutheran Church south of Denbigh, ND, and was very active in the church and choir. He attended rural school in McHenry County for eight years, and finished at Velva's Agricultural School in 1948, where he participated in sports, music and FFA. Arne proudly received the FFA State Farmer award in 1948. He continued his education attending Minot Business College and Hanson Trade School in Fargo to learn the art of welding.In 1949, Arne met Helen Day in Fargo where she was attending nursing school. They were married in Grand Forks, ND in 1953 and began their life together on the Garnaas farm near Denbigh, ND where they joined his parents on their grain and cattle ranch.Arne enjoyed riding horse, working with cattle, trapping mink, deer hunting, playing guitar and playing cards. He especially enjoyed spending time with family on holidays. Snowmobiling with family and friends was a favorite winter sport. A trip to Norway was a highlight vacation for Arne, his wife and his sister Betty, where they visited paternal relatives.Arne was very resilient and persistent, continuing his life's work in spite of physical challenges. He served on the planning committee for the Centennial Celebration at Norway Lutheran in 1994. In 1997 Arne and Helen relocated to rural Emmons County, where they continued ranching with their son and partner Howard Garnaas. They are active members of Peace Lutheran Church.In 2005 they moved from the farm to Linton, ND, Arne continued to help on the ranch until he retired in 2006 due to failing health. Helen cared for him at home until late 2014 at which time he became a resident of the Napoleon Care Center.Arne was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Helen, Linton, ND; his sister, Betty Ostby, Cody, WY; three sons, Charles (Donna), Basin, MT, Paul (Kelly), Oklahoma City, OK and Howard (Tina Arnts), Linton, ND; two grandchildren, Cory Garnaas and Emily Buckingham-Carlson (Jon); great grandchildren Kaitlyn, Jackson, Caleb and Jared; sisters-in-law, Marion Herzer and Catherine Foseide and several nieces and nephews.In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to Emmons County Ambulance or the Napoleon Care Center.
