Arvin W. Roos, 95, of Minneapolis and formerly of Strasburg, a WW II veteran, pastor, and family man, died Feb 26, 2017, at Hennepin County Medical Center, Minneapolis, after a 2-week battle with pneumonia.Arvin was born to a farm family of Dutch heritage on Sept 25, 1921, in Rock Rapids, Iowa. A few years later the family moved to Denver, where his father farmed and his mother taught at a Christian school, which he attended. In Colorado he acquired a love of the outdoors and especially the mountains. He graduated from Littleton, Colo., High School in 1939 and then enrolled at Central College in Pella, Iowa. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in the summer of 1942 and was called to active duty in February 1943. Eventually he was sent to England, where he flew 30 missions over Europe as a gunner in a B-17 bomber from June to October of 1944. After his return to the states, he married fellow Central College graduate Augusta Nieuwsma of Strasburg on Dec 10, 1944. Soon after his discharge from the Air corps in October 1945, Arvin began studying for the ministry at New Brunswick (N.J.) Theological Seminary. In 1949 he received his degree and began his career as a Reformed Church in America minister in Amsterdam, N.Y. As his family grew, he served Reformed churches in Duanesburg, N.Y.; Prairie City, Iowa; Irvington, N.J.; and Denver. After transferring to the Presbyterian Church USA in 1971, he served churches in Steele and Hazelton, N.D., and Tracy and Currie, Minn. He was greatly assisted in those parishes by Augusta, who was commissioned as a lay pastor.The couple retired in 1985 and moved to Strasburg, where he provided part-time pastoral services at the Strasburg Reformed Church for several years. He and Augusta were very active in the community, serving on the economic development board, leading CROP walks for the hungry, and helping to develop the Lawrence Welk homestead site, among other things.Arvin was a soft-spoken, hard-working, compassionate pastor and devoted father. He loved to travel, hike, and camp, taking his family to many of the national parks. He also was a dedicated conservationist, helping to organize the North Dakota Group of the Sierra Club in the 1970s. He loved music, especially classical, was an avid reader, and was partial to pancakes and ice cream. Scores of charities benefited from his generous giving over the years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Neil and Alida Roos, his wife, brother Harold Roos, and sister Helen Miller. He leaves behind his four children, Sylvia (Randy) Ryan, Kokomo, Ind., Judy Carter, Newhall, Calif., Robert (Terry) Roos, Richfield, Minn., and Arnold Roos, Minneapolis; six grandchildren, Dylan Hicks, Christopher Ryan, Matthew Ryan, Suzanne Ryan, Andrea Carter, and Sally Carter; and 12 great-grandchildren.All are welcome to a memory-sharing and prayer service at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, from 6-7 pm Friday, Mar. 3, followed by visitation from 7-9 pm. The funeral will be at 10 am Saturday, Mar. 4, at Strasburg Reformed Church, with burial at 11 am at the Pilgrim Home Cemetery in Strasburg. A luncheon will follow at noon at the Strasburg Senior Citizens Center. Memorials may be directed to Strasburg Reformed Church or the World Wildlife Fund.
