Augusta (Nieuwsma) Roos, 94, of Strasburg, ND, was called home to her Lord and Savior on March 19, 2013 in the Linton Hospital. A service of witness to the resurrection will be held at 10:30am Friday, March 22, 2013 at Strasburg Reformed Church with Reverend Floyd Haan officiating. The committal ceremony will be at the Pilgrim Home Cemetery, Strasburg, ND. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 21, 2013 from 12:00pm to 9:00pm at Myers Funeral Home, Linton. There will be a prayer service at 7:00pm. Augusta (Nieuwsma) Roos was called home to her Lord and Savior on March 19, 2013. One of eleven children of Ed and Jennie (Van Soest) Nieuwsma. She was born August 27, 1918 at the Home Sweet Home Farm southeast of Strasburg, ND. She attended the Harding Rural School and the Strasburg High School, graduating in 1937. After teacher training at the Ellendale (ND) Normal School, she taught for two years at the Harding School. In 1939, she entered Central College in Pella, IA where she won honors in debate and history. She sang in the choir and was active in ministries to rural churches. After graduating in 1943, she taught at Newkirk High School in Hospers, IA. At Central she met her lifetime sweetheart, Arvin Roos of Littleton, CO. The pair were married at Strasburg Reformed Church on December 10, 1944. They moved to Las Vegas, NV where Augusta worked as an executive secretary at Sears. From 1946 to 1949 they lived in New Jersey, where Arvin studied at New Brunswick Theological Seminary. From 1949 on, Augusta was a vital participant with Arvin in his ministry. She taught Sunday school, directed children's choirs, led women's groups, and helped in many other ways. They served faithfully at churches in New York, Iowa, New Jersey, Colorado, Minnesota and North Dakota. During their Colorado years, Augusta resumed her teaching career, serving as a high school substitute. In 1976 she became a commissioned lay preacher in the Presbyterian Church USA, making her and Arvin's work an official team ministry. The couple retired and moved to Strasburg in 1985. During her retirement, Augusta continued to be active in both community and church work. She occasionally led worship at Strasburg Reformed Church and other churches for twenty seven years. She served on Strasburg's Economic Development Council, co-chaired CROP Walks for hunger for seven years, sponsored the youth group at Strasburg Reformed Church for several years, helped develop the Lawrence Welk Homestead site, and started a "Working Women's Bible Study, " among other activities. Her sunny, vibrant, outgoing and compassionate personality, coupled with a special fondness for children, won her a host of friends. She was a loving wife, mother, and church and community leader. She leaves behind her husband, Arvin, Strasburg, ND; daughters: Sylvia (Randall) Ryan, Collierville, TN and Judy Carter, Newhall, CA; sons: Robert (Terry), Richfield, MN and Arnold, Minneapolis, MN; six grandchildren: Dylan Hicks, Christopher Ryan, Matthew Ryan, Suzanne Ryan, Andrea Carter and Sally Carter; and twelve great-grandchildren. Survivors also include brothers: Clarence (Marianne) Nieuwsma, San Jose, CA, Donald (Dorothy) Nieuwsma, Sun City West, AZ, and Ralph (Eleanor) Nieuwsma, Strasburg; a sister, Irene Wester, The Dalles, OR and a sister-in-law: Angie Nieuwsma, Escondido, CA and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers that memorials be given to Church World Service and Doctors Without Borders.
