Betty I. Wiest, 86, Herreid, SD, died May 7, 2010 in the Strasburg Care Center, Strasburg, ND. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 13, 2010 at Peace Lutheran Church, Herreid, SD with Rev. David Smith officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, ND and continue from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, Herreid, SD, where a prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before services at the church on Thursday. Betty was born May 6, 1924 in Artas, SD, the daughter of Wilhelm and Christina (Krueg) Jahraus. She attended school in Artas and graduated from Herreid High School in 1941. Betty went to business college in Mankato, MN, and worked at the Farm Loan Association in Bowdle, SD, from 1942-1945. She was a cashier at Campbell County Bank from 1945 1947. Betty married Eugene H. Wiest in Artas, SD on November 27, 1947 and they farmed and ranched northwest of Herreid, SD from 1947 1985 when they moved into Herreid. Eugene died on May 16, 1998. Betty entered the Herreid Good Samaritan Center in March, 2009 and on March 16, 2010, moved to Strasburg Care Center. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Herreid, where she was active in the Ladies Circle, Sunday School teacher, choir and music (solos, etc.) Betty was a charter member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 170, Civic Club member, a member of Capitol Club, while Eugene served in the State Legislature, and was instrumental in making and presenting a quilt for then Governor Janklow. She served on the Campbell County Bank Board for 12 years as well as Campbell County Farm Bureau and Campbell County Republican Committee Women for several years. Betty enjoyed her family, especially her grandchildren. She also enjoyed cooking, baking and flower gardening. Betty is survived by 7 children, Eva Lynn Wiest and Dan Rhiger of Portland, OR, Karl and Faith Wiest of Delano, MN, Dwight and Julie Wiest of Herreid, Christine and Dan Gubbels of Beulah, ND, Cynthia Hettinger, Grant and Patricia Wiest, John and Mary Wiest, all of Herreid; 10 grandchildren and six step grandchildren, one brother, William Jahraus of Aberdeen, SD; sister-in-law: Darleen Jahraus of Bismarck, ND, brother in law and sister-in-law, Erv and Ann Wiest of Socorro, NM, and brother-in-law, Clay Wiest of Carlsbad, CA, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one granddaughter, Kallie Marie Wiest, four sisters, Ellanora Grosz, C. Charlotte Pickering, Agnes Jahraus, Jeanette Morrison and one brother, Cecil Jahraus.
