Obituary

Catherine "Katie" Wald, 87, of Strasburg, ND, passed away on Friday, July 6, 2018 at the Strasburg Care Center.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hague, ND.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. on Monday at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, ND.

Catherine "Katie" Wald, 87, was born on November 5, 1930, the only child of Lambert and Barbara (Wangler) Glatt. She grew up on the family farm east of Hague. Katie graduated from Hague High School in 1949 as Valedictorian of her class and attended Northern State Teachers College in Aberdeen, South Dakota.

She married Felix Wald on July 8, 1952 at St. Mary's Church in Hague. They were married for 65 years and had 10 children; six girls and four boys. They farmed east of Hague until their retirement in 1992 when they built and moved into their new home in Strasburg.

Katie loved the farm life and all that came with it. She was also very active in the community. Katie was a member of the St. Mary's Church Altar Society and the Hague Senior Citizens Club. She was also a founding member of the local Germans from Russia Heritage chapter and was on the Board of Directors of the International Germans from Russia Society. She was involved with the making of documentaries for Prairie Public TV about the Germans from Russia traditions. And she was a member of the Pioneer Heritage group for the preservation of the Lawrence Welk Homestead. Katie also helped coordinate and organize events like the Wangler family Reunion, Wald family Reunion, the 1986 Hague all-class Reunion, and the Hague Centennial in 2008.

After her retirement, Katie became an active author of many books. Her books include the following: The History of  St. Mary's Church and the town of Hague, Hague Area Book II, The Wangler Family History Book, The Hague Centennial Book, and The Felix Wald Family History Book .

Katie loved her big family and all the family holidays, weddings, and celebrations that came with it. She loved to dance polkas and waltzes with her husband. Katie and Felix also enjoyed traveling together, visiting many places in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. She was an excellent cook, kuchen baker, and took great pride in teaching her daughters to cook as well.

Katie was a resident at the Strasburg Care Center for the last 5 years of her life where she was well cared for.

Katie is survived by her husband of 65 years, Felix, children: Jody Wald, Gary (Madonna) Wald, Kathy Weninger (Scott Steckler) and Janet Wald (Chuck Markel) all of Bismarck, Duane (Eileen) Wald of Hague, Karen (Dennis) Hulm of Strasburg, LeeAnn (Tony) Jangula, Dean (Audrey) Wald, and Darin Wald all of Bismarck, and Carrie (Doug) Gefroh of Hague. Twenty grandchildren, twenty-one great grandchildren with two more on the way, sisters-in-law, Benedicta Scherr, Marie (Pat) Kaikani, Alice (Jim) Johnstun, and brother-in-law, Tony (Elaine) Wald.

She was preceded in death by two stillborn children, her parents, Felix's parents, Anton and Ida Wald, brother-in-law Martin and Rose Wald, and brother-in-law Pius Scherr.
