Delmer was born on the family farm south of Hull, ND, on January 25, 1934. He was the second of seven children born to Cornie and Winnie (Nieuwsma) Droog. He attended the Nieuwsma school and graduated from Strasburg in 1952. He volunteered for the army and served from 1954 to 1956. After his honorable discharge, Delmer attended business college in Fargo, ND. He also helped on the family farm during the summers. He graduated in three years, with a degree in business.
On November 20, 1959, he married Matilda "Tillie" Looyenga in Pollock, SD. In June 1959, Delmer had begun his career at Herreid Equity, for $275 per month. Herreid became the newlywed's home, and they never left. In 1972, he became the manager, a position he would hold for 23 years until he retired. After retiring, Delmer continued to work at North Central, and retired again on 2014 at the age of 80, after 55 years of continuous employment at the elevator.
Delmer was an active member of the Hull Christian Reformed Church, where he served as an elder, deacon, cadet leader, catechism teacher, Sunday school teacher, and superintendent.
Delmer enjoyed keeping up with his children and grandchildren, sports, reading and spending time on his hobby farm at the edge of town, where he had cattle and "tolerated" chickens.
Those sharing in his life include his wife of 59 years, Matilda; his children, Craig (Janet) of Katy, TX and Darlys (Tim) Heilman of Warner, SD; his grandchildren, Tyler and Madeline Droog, and Ryan and Rachel Heilman; his sisters, Corrine Vander Vorst and Alice (Ivan) Groothuis; his brothers, Preston (Diane) Droog and Ron (Deb) Droog; and sister-in-law, Darlene Droog.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-mother Angie; his brother Eldon Droog; his sister, Mary Lou Lamb; and brother-in-law, Billy Vander Vorst.
