Edwin was born to William and Margaret (Hassa) Malard on April 16, 1924, the fourth of nine children. He was born and raised in Apple Creek Township, where he attended school at Apple Creek School, until he finished the eighth grade. Edwin spent some time helping his father on the farm and also working for their neighbors.
Edwin was introduced to the love of his life, Valda (Wheeler), by his sister Vivian. The couple was united in marriage on September 8 th , 1945 and would have celebrated their 73 rd anniversary this year. They were blessed with three children, Carol, Deborah and James.
Edwin worked with his father on the farm until 1959, when he and Valda moved to Boyd Township. In December of 1963, Edwin and Valda purchased a farm in the Moffit/Hazleton, ND area. He worked hard on his farm, and said that the happiest times were making hay and taking care of his sheep. His work ethic was that of the highest standard and he was always willing to lend a hand to a neighbor in need. One of his favorite memories was when his granddaughter, Monique, made it possible for Edwin and his wife to fly to Alaska, spend time with Monique and her family, and to enjoy all the sites he had loved reading about.
Edwin is survived by his wife, Valda; two children, Deborah Kay (Van) Larson of Bismarck and James (Vicki) Malard of Hazelton; his grandchildren, Michael David Larson, Eric James (Kelly) Larson, Amanda Rae (Gregg) Heupel, Monique (Curt) Christensen, Alicia Malard, Joshua (Renee) Malard and Jessica (Cody) Kummer; his great-grandchildren, Trevor Malard; Tucker, Sawyer and Larkin Christensen; Matthew and David Heupel; Kaitlyn, Jenna and Allie Malard; Regan and Connor Kummer; Georgia Larson and Ryan Haas; Nickoli Schmitcke; sister-in-law, Maysil (Malard) Lodoen. Edwin was always so proud of his family, he always said that he was the happiest when he was with his grandchildren.
Edwin was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings; Helen Braun, Arlene Heath, Fern Brown, Vivian Dorman, Jack Malard, Marion Felchle, Agnes Krueger and Harvey Malard; his daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Frank Herauf and his grandson Sean Larson.
The family would like to give special thanks to Sanford Hospice for all the care given to Edwin; his nurse Jessie, who Edwin called "his angel" and the doctors and nurses who cared for him during his fight against cancer.
