Eldon G
Hollaar
Oct 22, 1933 — May 25, 2020
Eldon G. Hollaar, 86, of Pollock, S.D. passed away peacefully at his home with family by his side on Memorial Day 2020.
Eldon was born the middle of 12 children on October 22, 1933 on the family farm near Hull, N.D. to Aren "Ike" and Harriet "Hattie" (Haveman) Hollaar. Eldon attended country school near the farm, at the bottom of the hill!
In 1954 he joined the United States Army and served his country in Korea during the war. When he returned, he attended mechanic's school in Fargo and then worked at Senftner's Auto in Herreid SD.
On September 11, 1957 Eldon married Twylah Vander Vorst, the daughter of Alfred and Maggie Vander Vorst, at the Hope Reformed Church in Westfield and in 1958 became the third generation to live on the Vander Vorst Family farm. Together they raised six children and as a family milked cows, farmed the land and enjoyed all aspects of life on the farm.
They sold the dairy cows in 1987 and retired into Pollock in 2000. He enjoyed morning coffee at the café and playing board and card games, especially pinochle, with family and friends.
Eldon and Twylah traveled all 50 states visiting family and friends. They also ventured to the Holy Land, Holland and Africa.
Throughout his life Eldon enjoyed giving his time to his church and community. He was an elder and Sunday School teacher for many years, active with Steer INC, and the local American Legion. He and Twylah served on a mission trip in Honduras, and rebuilt homes in Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina. When Eldon was unable to physically help, he spent time in his office donating to various charities. His love and generosity will be deeply missed by those who knew him.
Eldon is survived by his wife of 63 years, Twylah; children, Kevin (Carol) Hollaar of Jamestown, ND, Audrey Bork of Ashley, ND, Wanda (Roger) Larson of Sioux Falls, SD, Karen (Tony) Esposito of Gorham, ME, Greg (Lisa) Hollaar of Hartford, SD and Mark (Jean) Hollaar of Fargo, ND; 16 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; siblings, Carol Jean (Ernest) Dykema, Frances Nieuwsma, Jim Hollaar, Harriet Haak, Judy Van Beek, LeRoy (Ilean) Hollaar, Betty (Glen) Vermeer; in-laws, Lois Hollaar, Sid and Marlene Backman;
