Emma Lutz, 91, Herreid, SD died Sunday, September 8, 2013 at the Selby Good Samaritan Center, Selby, SD.Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 14, 2013 at Herreid Reformed Church, with Rev. Don Hill officiating. Visitiation will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.She was born March 22, 1922, near Hague, N.D., to Jake and Katherine Fuehrer. Emma graduated from high school and furthered her education with a bachelor's degree in education from Northern University; Aberdeen, S.D. Emma married Lawrence Lutz at the Congregational Church in Greenway on January 31, 1947, where they owned the Greenway Mercantile for 18 years. Education and community were very important to Emma. She gave her time and dedication to bettering every young person she touched for more than 50 years. While Lawrence operated the mercantile, Emma taught elementary school at Greenway, Artas and Mound City. In 1963, Lawrence and Emma moved to Herreid, S.D., where Emma continued to teach until her retirement. After retiring, Emma enjoyed planting flowers, quilting, and spending time with her family. Emma loved her days and evenings on her front porch located on Highway 83 in Herreid. She said hello to those passing by or simply laughed with Lawrence while watching their birds and squirrels jump from tree to tree.Everyone who knew Emma was aware of her passion for Christmas. Lawrence understood her enthusiasm and diligently snow plowed the front yard and climbed on the roof to get everything completely lit and all the decorations in place. The inside of the house was decked out just as much as the outside, if not more. Emma loved going to Menards to see the new Christmas dcor, oh-ing and ah-ing like a child.Emma's four grandchildren, Matt, Chris, Heather and Dawn spent many summers with their Grandpa Lawrence and Grandma Emma. They remember summer days at the pool, suppers on the deck and lazy afternoons in the back yard on a chaise lounge. The pinnacle moment of the season was a trip to Aberdeen to visit Storybook Land, toy shopping, and pizza for supper.Emma's parents, Jacob J. and Katherine Fuehrer, brothers, Jake Fuehrer and Bill Fuehrer and sisters, Amanda Berreth and Freda Zimmerman, daughter-in-law, Mary Lutz, and husband Lawrence Lutz preceded her in death. She is survived by two sons and one daughter-in-law: Blaine Lutz of Bismarck, N.D., and Darwin and Kristina Lutz of St. Louis, Mo; five grandchildren: Dawn, Chris, Matthew, Heather and Tyler; two great grandchildren, Blake and Bailey.Now that she is gone, her loved ones can imagine her together again with Lawrence. He is driving a Cadillac with Emma in the back seat wearing her hat and George Strait playing on the tape deck.
