Obituary

Evelyn Mae Backhaus, 80, Linton, ND died Thursday, September 1, 2016 at St. Alexius Hospital, Bismarck, ND.Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 3, 2016 at Pollock Memorial Presbyterian Church, Pollock, SD with Rev. Floyd Haan officiating. Burial will be in Dale Cemetery, Pollock, SD. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, September 2, 2016, at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, ND where there will be a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.Evelyn was born January 24, 1936 in Rural Pollock, SD, the daughter of Archie and Gertrude (Biesheuvel) Ryckman. She grew up on a farm eight miles northwest of Pollock and attended country school through 8th grade. Evelyn graduated from Pollock High School in 1953. Evelyn married Ronald Backhaus on September 6, 1954 at Pollock Presbyterian Church and together they had four children. She worked as a cook at the Pollock School for several years. She also helped on the farm and had various other jobs throughout the years. Evelyn was a wonderful cook and was especially known for the delicious bread she baked. She enjoyed gardening, growing strawberries, making jelly and canning. Evelyn loved to sing, especially singing with the church choir. She also greatly enjoyed traveling, making several big trips which included travels to New York, Niagra Falls, Europe and Hawaii. More recently she enjoyed a trip with her children to Las Vegas in celebration of her 80th birthday. Evelyn was a member of Pollock Memorial Presbyterian Church and Women's Circle. Evelyn is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Vicki Backhaus of Menoken, ND; three daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Butch Morgan of Harrisburg, SD, Cheryl and Les Dale of Cooperstown, ND, and Rhonda and Tim Dockter, Linton, ND; 14 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren; six sisters, Loretta Westbrook, Polly Becker, Phyllis (Reuben) Schatz, Carol (Lloyd) Schaner, Arlene Cullen and Patty (Arvin) Kilen; one brother, Tom Ryckman, and brothers-in-law, Dennis Mittleider and Ronald Ryckman.Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband, grandson, Johnny Morgan, sister, Virginia Mittleider, three brothers-in-law Lester Westbrook, Donnie Becker & Mike Cullen as well as brothers and sisters-in-law, Norman (Helen) Backhaus and Joann Ryckman.
