The funeral for Gerald J. Hulm, 60, Strasburg, ND, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Hague, ND. Burial will be in the church cemetery. He died Friday, April 6, 2012 in the Linton Hospital. Visitation will be Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Myers Funeral Home, Linton and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the church in Hague where there will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m"Dad, your guiding hand on my shoulder will remain with me forever."UnknownIn life, Gerald Hulm enjoyed many things: playing pinochle, farming, fishing, looking for good farm equipment, driving his Corvette, hunting gophers with his twin brother, Darrel. But more than anything, Gerald loved his family, especially his children, granddaughter and late wife, Cathy. Gerald devoted his life to his family and touched many lives. Gerald J. Hulm was born March 4, 1952 in Bismarck, ND, to Pius and Delores (Mastel) Hulm. He grew up on a family farm in the Hague area with eight brothers and sisters. Gerald attended Harding Township grade school and graduated from Strasburg High School in 1970. After attending Dickinson State College for a year, Gerald moved to Minneapolis where he worked at an assembly plant. On June 25, 1975, Pius passed away and Gerald and Darrel moved home to help run the family farm. Several years later, Gerald met the love of his life, Cathy Krumm, while she was driving a combine. They married on July 18, 1981, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hague, ND. Gerald and Cathy were blessed with five beautiful children whom they cherished deeply: Renee, Laurie, Eric, Lisa and Kimberly. Together with Darrel and his wife Joyce, Gerald and Cathy were active dairy and grain farmers until they lost the farm to flood waters in 1997. At that point, Gerald, Cathy, and the kids moved to Strasburg and opened Cathy's Caf, a popular local restaurant. They ran the restaurant together until 2000, when Cathy died in a motorcycle accident. The grief of this tragic loss could cripple a family, but Gerald and the kids drew on their collective strength to persevere. The family enjoyed vacationing together and spent many summer weeks in Minnesota fishing, boating, and playing cards. To celebrate his 60th birthday, Gerald and the kids spent the weekend in Deadwood, SD, where they enjoyed snowmobiling, skiing, and spending time together. After his kids left for college, Gerald would frequently drive to Bismarck to take them out to dinner. In addition to being a proud father, Gerald adored his first grandchild, Kennedy Catherine, daughter of Eric and Andrea Hulm. Gerald loved starting his day with a cup of coffee with his brother Darrel. He also looked forward to sharing caramel rolls with family after Sunday mass, and joining Andy and Lisa Hulm for dinner with the kids. Gerald is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Andrea Hulm, Strasburg, ND; four daughters and one son-in-law: Renee and John Huber, Bismarck, ND; Laurie Hulm, Mandan, ND; Lisa Hulm, Casselton, ND and Kimberly Hulm, Bismarck; and granddaughter Kennedy Catherine Hulm; four brothers: Ron Hulm, White Bear Lake, MN; Darrel and Joyce Hulm, Strasburg; Dennis and Karen Hulm, Strasburg; Duane and Julie Hulm, Hague; four sisters: Diane and John Kreye, Brooklyn Park, MN; Janice and Rodney Geffre, Mahtomedi, MN; Eileen and Duane Wald, Hague; and Sheila and Gerald Hartman, Tacoma, WA; his mother, Delores Hulm-Kramer of Strasburg. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and in-laws. Gerald also leaves behind many valued friends that he has made over the years. Preceding Gerald in death are his beloved wife Catherine; father, Pius Hulm; father-in-law, Joseph Krumm; mother-in-law, Helen Krumm; step-father, Leo Kramer; and his Mastel and Hulm Grandparents.
