Grant J. Wiest, 61, of Herreid, SD passed away Friday, December 11, 2020 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN after a courageous battle with COVID 19.

A private family service will be held Saturday, December 19, 2020 at 10:30 am at Peace Lutheran Church, Herreid, SD with Reverend David Lund officiating. The service will also be live streamed and can be followed at the www.myersfh.com website.

The family welcomes everyone to join them at the Fairview Cemetery, Herreid, SD for burial following the service. We ask that everyone follow the social distancing guidelines and be courteous to each other by wearing a mask.

The family invites everyone to join them in a Celebration of Life party for Grant on June 12th, 2021.

Grant Jay Wiest was born to Eugene H. and Betty (Jahraus) Wiest on June 12, 1959 in Bismarck, ND. He graduated in 1977 from Herreid High School and attended Lake Area Technicial Institute in Watertown for Agriculture Production. He returned to Herreid to begin his farming career. On December 10, 1988 he married Patricia Gehrke from Aneta, ND and they filled 32 years with love raising kids, cattle and crops. He was a lifelong member of Peace Lutheran Church in Herreid. Grant was also a member of the Herreid Jaycees, Farm Bureau and Campbell County Bank Board of Directors, serving as President for several years.

In 2007 Grant took a life changing church mission trip to Cameroon, Africa where he helped construct roofs on churches. He especially enjoyed spending time with the children and said he never sang "Jesus Loves Me" so many times in his life. It amazed him to see how little they had, yet how happy they were.

Grant's two greatest loves were his family and his farm. He loved working with his sons on the farm every day and taught them to appreciate and care for all land no matter if it was their own or leased. He had a special fondness for raising corn and working with cattle.  He was kind and gentle and always saw the good in people. He had a big, generous heart and frequently paid someone's bill or anonymously donated to someone in need. At day's end he looked forward to going home to his girls – his wife and soulmate, his "Patty" and daughter Mallory whom he called his "miracle" after he steadfastly supported her through three brain surgeries. He enjoyed simple pleasures – coffee with his neighbors in his shop, a drink around the campfire with friends, or a golf cart ride around town to see who was out and about. There was always a lot of laughter when he was around, and his smile and positive attitude will be greatly missed.

So very grateful to have shared his life are his wife Patricia, sons Adam Wiest and Luke Wiest and daughter Mallory Wiest of Herreid; Siblings Eva (Dan) Rhiger of Portland, OR, Karl (Faith) Wiest of Delano, MN, Dwight (Julie) Wiest of Herreid, Christine (Dan) Gubbels of Aberdeen, SD, Cindy Hettinger and John Wiest, both of Herreid, SD. He also leaves behind his father and mother in law, Charles and Helen Gehrke of Aneta, ND; sisters-in-law Stephanie (Randy) Engberg of Grand Prairie, TX and Janelle Gehrke of Bondurant, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Betty Wiest and a sister-in-law, Mary Wiest.

Grant left this world holding our hands and listening to a recording of his daughter singing one of his favorite songs "O Holy Night". His family would like everyone to know that COVID 19 is real, and it is heartbreaking. Please take care of each other.
