Helen Garnaas, 91, of Linton passed away Thursday, April 29, 2021 at the Strasburg Care Center, Strasburg, North Dakota.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 4, 2021, with a prayer service starting at 7:00 p.m., at Myers Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church with Pastor Sean Barnhart officiating. Myers Funeral Home of Linton will be streaming Helen's service for any family and friends that can't attend at www.Myersfh.com under Helen's obituary.

Burial will take place at 4:00 p.m. at Norway Lutheran Church Cemetery, Denbigh, North Dakota.

Helen Blanche Day was born February 19, 1930 in Hope, ND, the eldest daughter of Joseph Rollin (JR) and Catherine (Bissett) Day.

She attended school in Crary, Minot and Grand Forks, North Dakota graduating from Grand Forks Central in 1948. Helen furthered her education by pursuing a degree in nursing from St. Luke's School of Nursing, Fargo, North Dakota graduating in 1951.

While in Fargo she met the love of her life Arne Carlton Garnaas and on April 27, 1953, they were married in Grand Forks. The couple made their home in McHenry County, North Dakota joining the Garnaas' family farm.

Helen and Arne became proud parents to three sons, Charles, Paul and Howard. Along with the growth of her family, her community activities also grew. Helen participated in Velva Homemakers, Velva Pioneer Daughters, Velva Band Mothers, PTA and community music events.  She enjoyed sewing, reading, crafts, ceramics, class reunions, snowmobiling and whenever possible a good card game.

Through the years Helen worked alongside her husband, raised her family and continued her nursing career working at Trinity Hospital, Minot, North Dakota and later at Souris Valley Care Center in Velva, North Dakota where she retired.

After many years of flooding by the Mouse River the family relocated their farm and ranch operation from McHenry County to Emmons County, and resumed working alongside their son Howard Garnaas.

Helen's love of God began with her baptism in 1945 at First National Church where in her youth she was active in choir and fellowships. Once married she became a member of Norway Lutheran Church, in Denbigh, North Dakota she was active in Sunday school, choir, and women groups. Helen gained recognition for her faithful service as the church organist and was honored to be a delegate to the Triennial Consortion of WELCA in Minneapolis 1996. As a member of Peace Lutheran Church Linton, North Dakota she was active in choir and PLC women.

Helen and Arne retired from farm life in 2005 and made their home in Linton. Forever the nurse and caregiver Helen determinedly took care of Arne until he moved to the Napoleon Care Center. She remained living in her home in Linton until health issues recently required her moving to Strasburg Care Center, Strasburg, North Dakota.

Helen is proceeded in death by her husband Arne Garnaas, parents Joseph and Catherine (Bissett) Day and sister Marian Herzer, brothers-in-law Kaye Herzer and EdRoy Foseide and sister-in-law Betty Ostby.

Helen is survived by her sons Charles (Donna) Garnaas, Paul (Kelly) Garnaas and Howard (Tina Arnts) Garnaas, sister Catherine Foseide, several grandchildren, great- grandchildren and beloved nieces and nephews.
