Herbert was born on May 14, 1930 in Linton, North Dakota. He was the son of Jacob and Hanna (Breckel) Walther. He was raised and educated on a farm west of Linton in the center of where Beaver Bay is now.

He married Estella Lipp on October 9, 1951 in Linton. From their union 3 children were born.  Herbert worked in his younger years for the W.E. Petrie Store, did some construction and then worked at the Linton Hatchery. In 1951, shortly after his marriage, he entered the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed aboard a ship through the entire two years during the Korean Conflict and then was 8 years in the Marine Corps Reserves. Upon his discharge, he returned to Linton where he and Estella bought the Highway Grocery Store and operated it until 1966. He then bought the Gamble Store and sold it in 1973. That same year he began working for the US Chamber of Commerce which is based in Washington, DC, as a Membership Sales Representative. He retired in 1990.

After retiring Herb devoted some of his time in developing lots and cabin sites on the Walther family land located by Beaver Bay west of Linton. He also had a cabin where he loved to spend his time looking over Beaver Bay. He planted trees, built rock gardens, fountains and was great for setting out ornaments of all kinds to give a theme park look. He especially loved planting his flowers both at home and at his cabin and they were always pretty and colorful.

Herb was a member of the American Legion and VFW from the day of his discharge. He was also an alumni member of the US Chamber of Commerce.

In 2016 Herb had the honor of taking the Honor Flight to Washington DC, being escorted by his son-in-law Dennis DeGree, and was thrilled at the hero's welcome they received at the Fargo airport on their return. In 2018 he was honored for his military service at the PBR Bullarma in Bismarck. He was proud of his service and to be recognized for it.

Grateful to have shared his life was his wife of 47 years, three daughters, Cynthia (Dennis) DeGree of Las Vegas, NV, Tena (Dennis) Weber, Linton, ND and Faye Fiergola, Linton, eight Grandchildren, Jack (Tisha) DeGree and Eddie (Jenna) DeGree, Las Vegas, NV, Summer (Steve) Ibach, Berthold, ND, Derek (Alex) Weber, Denver, CO, Ivy (John) Kost, Herreid, SD, Crystal (Theo) Stoller, Glen Ullin, ND, Samantha and Colin Fiergola, Linton, ND, sixteen Great-Grandchildren, and Betty Ann Roehrich, a close friend and caregiver.
