Herbert Werner, 81, Wishek, formerly of Hazelton, ND, died Thursday, March 31, 2011 in the Wishek Home for the Aged. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 10, 2011 at Myers Funeral Home Chapel, Linton, ND. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home and continue for one hour before time of service Sunday. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery, Mandan, at 10:00 a.m. Monday, April 11, 2011. Military honors will be given by Mandan VFW Post 707. Herb was born October 24, 1929 on the McDonald farm north of Hazelton, the son of Reinhold and Rosina (Schmidt) Werner. He was baptized at Peace Lutheran Church in Linton and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hazelton. Herb was raised and educated in Hazelton and graduated from Hazelton High School in 1947. He also attended Jamestown College. Herb served in the US Air fForce from 1948 1952. He was stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX and the Naval Ordinance Laboratory in Silver Springs, MD. When in the US Air Force he did research in climatology and precision measurements in various locations throughout the United States. He married Liza Lea Altgilbers on October 24, 1954 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hazelton, ND. They owned the Hazelton Radio Shop. In 1961 they moved to California where he worked at Ford Aeronautics and North American Aviation, Inc. doing research. Lisa and Herb also owned Dakota American Christian Art and Book Company which printed and sold Christian Artwork. They also lived in Hot Springs, SD before moving back to Hazelton in 1987. Liza died July 9, 1994. Her had been a resident of the Wishek Home for the Aged for the last eight months. Herb is survived by two step-daughters: Wendylynn "Wendy" Mason of Ft. Collins, Co and Dianna Smith of Cheyenne, WY, seven step grandchildren and several step great grandchildren; two sisers, Lila Jane Werner of Hazelton, ND and Beatrice Heer of Hazelton, ND; one niece and nephew, Denise (Donald) Orthmeyer, David (Char) Heer, all of Hazelton, ND and Dione Heer of Green Valley, AZ; four great nieces and nephews: Kristin (Chris) Meyer, Joel and Jesse Heer and Benajah Orthmeyer; and special friend and caregiver, Jonna (Wishek) Hochhalter of Wishek, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 1994 and a great niece, Kari Lynn Orthmeyer. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Liza Lea Memorial Library and North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.
