Hunter J. Mattheis, 20, of Linton, died peacefully surrounded by his family at St. Mary's in Rochester, MN.  Memorial service will be held at 10:30am, Saturday, October 7, 2023 at Peace Lutheran Church, Linton with Pastor Marlin Sapp officiating.  Burial will be in the Linton Cemetery.  Visitation will be held on Friday, October 6, 2023 from 5pm to 7:30pm at Linton United Methodist Church.  There will be a prayer service at 7:30pm.

Hunter James Mattheis was born on November 23, 2002 in Bismarck, ND, the son of Ross and Terra (Senger) Mattheis.  Hunter took his 1st flight to the Children's Hospital in Minneapolis only 2 days after his birth.  Hunter was diagnosed with HLHS.  He had open heart surgery on December 3, 2002.  Hunter went home for the 1st time on December 19, 2002.  Hunter had his 2nd surgery on May 16, 2003 and his 3rd surgery on March 30, 2005.  Hunter spent a lot of time in and out of the hospital, that didn't stop him from being a little boy.  He enjoyed Blues Clues, dinosaurs and Legos.  Hunter attended school in Linton.  When he was a freshman, he enrolled in a radio broadcasting class, where he found his calling.  He became a regular on the KLHS radio station.  "Retro Red" as he was known, enjoyed all music and all areas of broadcasting.  Hunter had a broadcasting studio set up in his basement during Covid so he could keep doing the broadcast.

In 2013, Hunter was granted a special trip to Disney through Make a Wish of ND.  He was able to do some Jedi training, wear a robe and use a real light saber.  He also went to the Kennedy Space Center and to the ocean.

Hunter graduated from Linton High School in May of 2022.  He had a special relationship with his classmates.  Even though Hunter could not always participate in school activities, his classmates were always very caring.  Hunter had plans to attend Minot State University and major in broadcasting.

In late 2021, Hunter began to not feel well.  After further testing, it was determined that Hunter was to be placed on the transplant list.   On September 22 at 7pm, Hunter received the call that a heart and liver were available for transplant.  Larry rushed him into Linton and he and his family left for Rochester, MN right away.  Hunter was very excited and smiling as they wheeled him in for surgery.  Hunter fought hard for 4 days after receiving his heart and liver.  The doctors, nurses and staff at St. Mary's took excellent care of Hunter using their skills, but most importantly their hearts.

Hunter was a member of the Linton United Methodist Church.  He enjoyed treasure hunting with his grandparents, Bona and Larry, collecting license plates and antiques.  He also enjoyed watching movies, Star Wars, Marvel, DC, video games, and playing pinochle, board games and most of all spending time with his family.  He also enjoyed fishing with his brother and uncles Mike and JD.

Hunter was loved by everyone and we will miss him always and his huge, bright smile.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Terra Lynn Mattheis; grandpa, Kenneth Ricketts; great grandparents: Ray & Margarette Senger, Alex Bichler, Ella & Neil Smith and Reiny Mattheis
