Obituary

James E. Nieuwsma, of Herreid, SD, passed away in Cypress, Texas on Wednesday, August 1, 2018.

Visitation will be at Hope Reformed Church in Westfield, ND on Wednesday, August 8th, from 5:30 - 7:00 pm
Prayer service will follow at 7:00 pm.

A Funeral Service will be at the Hope Reformed Church on Thursday, August 9th, 2018, at 10:30 am.

Burial will take place at the Dale Cemetery, Emmons Co. ND.

Jim was born on September 22, 1942, the oldest son of Peter and Genevieve (Pool) Nieuwsma's 11 children. James grew up with his family south of Hull, ND, where he attended country school, before graduating Strasburg high school in 1961.

He married Maebel Vander Laan on October 20, 1961. They were married for 56 years, in which they were blessed with four children, three sons and a daughter.

Jim and his family moved to a farm just west of Herreid where Jim was an active member of the First Reformed Church, and held the secretary/treasurer position. He was a talented fisherman who entered several tournaments with his sons. He was also an avid softball player, enjoyed going hunting with friends and family, and in his retirement, he enjoyed playing cards with his buddies or a relaxing round of Bingo. He loved to spend time, driving around in the country, looking at the crops.

He is survived by his wife Maebel, three sons; Gaylan Nieuwsma, Cypress, TX; Clinton Nieuwsma, Pollock, SD; Carlyn (Susan) Nieuwsma, Sioux Falls, SD, one daughter; Roxane (Scott) Huber, Sioux Falls, four grandsons; Eric Huber, Mason Nieuwsma, Landon Nieuwsma, Tanner Nieuwsma, three step grandchildren; Angela Hlavka, Matthew Bakke, Heather Jurrens, his siblings; Donald (Nancy) Nieuwsma, Lincoln, ND, Pearl (Albert) Luithle, Mott, ND, Preston (Barbara) Nieuwsma, Pollock, SD, Kay Selzler, Linton, ND, Elwin (Heidi) Nieuwsma, Linton, brother-in-law; Louis Vander Vorste, Pollock, sister-in-law; Melana Nieuwsma, Minneapolis, MN.

He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, infant brother Peter and infant brother Kenneth, Sandra (Sandy), William (Billy), Audrey Vander Vorste, and his grandparents.
