James Schwab, 79, Strasburg, ND, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 19, 2010 at the Strasburg Care Center, due to complications from Parkinson's disease. The fourth child of John and Magdalena (Baumgartner) Schwab, James was born in Strasburg, ND on August 22, 1931. He attended country school and was a 1950 graduate of St. Ben's High School. On August 6, 1956, Jim married Edna Welk at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Strasburg. James served in the US Army from 1956 to 1958 and then returned to farm east of Strasburg where they raised their six children. James was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus and served as Grand Knight. He was PTA President of St. Benedict Grade School, and acted as Right to Life Chairman for several years. He was a member of the Strasburg Elevator Board of Directors for six years, serving three of those years as President. Dearest to the heart of James were his faith, his family, farming and music. A loving husband and patient father, he cherished life and the gift of children. Jim loved fishing and playing cards, both passions he shared with his friends and family. Most noted as an entertainer, Jimmy was a member of the Bubbling Quintet Band, for over 50 years, playing dances throughout North and South Dakota. A very talented musician, he often played trumpet and drums at the same time. He was a life-time member of the Musician's Union. The band was honored to have been invited to perform at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC in 1975 and at the International Polkafest in Kitzbuhel, Austria in 1978. He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Edna; one son and daughter-in-law: Gerard and Mary Schwab of Strasburg; five daughters and one son-in-law: Janet Schwab and friend Terry Faller, Jeanene and Dan Jacob, Janel Schwab and friend Dave Hoiby, Jodi Schwab and Jill Schwab, all of Bismarck; four grandchildren: Mandy (Rob) Hummel of Jamestown, Jesse Schwab of Strasburg and Steven and Patrick Jacob of Bismarck; four great grandchildren: Trey, Tate, Brady and Aubrie Hummel; one brother and sister-in-law: Larry and Evelyn Schwab of Strasburg; five sisters: Florence Klein of San Juan Capistrano, CA, Irene Lipp of Milwaukee, WI, LaVerne and Jim Feist of Beloit, WI, Antonia Baumgartner of Oak Creek, WI and Clara and Jim Huber of Mandan; three sisters-in-laws: Imogene Schwab, Adeline Schwab and Betty Covey. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Joe, John and Clarence, and two brothers-in-law, Jim Lipp and Leroy Baumgartner. James will be remembered for his commitment to his faith, his wife, his children and his fans.
