The funeral for John R. Van Vugt, 88, Mobridge, SD, formerly of Westfield, ND, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Hope Reformed Church, Westfield. Burial will be in Westfield Cemetery. He died Wednesday, August 3, 2011 in a Bismarck, ND Care Center. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, ND and from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the church with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. John R. (Bub) Van Vugt was born July 2, 1923 to Katherine (Compaan) and Gerrit Van Vugt on his grandparents (Egbert and Antje Compaans) homestead in Westfield, ND. He attended the Bakker country school near their farm, two years of high school at Hull, ND, and graduated from Strasburg High School in 1940. In 1941 he moved to Michigan and worked at a Pepsi Cola factory, a clothing factory, and a sugar beet factory. When WWII began he returned to farm with his family. One of his favorite times was being outside fixing fence. On June 11, 1947 he married Evelyn Fish. They continued to farm while they raised five daughters. Throughout the years, he was employed as a bus driver, auto shop foreman in Mobridge, cheese plant worker in Pollock, canning plant foreman in Owatonna, MN, and a penitentiary guard in Bismarck. After 15 years as a guard at the North Dakota State Penitentiary, he retired to the family farm. In 2006 they moved to Mobridge, SD where he lived until February 2011, when he entered the Strasburg Care Center. He entered St. Gabriels Care Center in Bismarck, ND in April 2011. He is survived by his wife Evelyn of Mobridge, daughters; Barb and Preston Nieuwsma of Pollock, Brenda Van Vugt and Randy Lee Minneapolis, MN, Bonnie Van Vugt and Mouritz Engquist, Oakes, ND, Betty Van Vugt and Tom Simmers, Stanley, ND, and Ann and John Williams, Medway, MA, Grandchildren; Tammie and Fred Fischer, Spencer Merchant, Tate Merchant, Corey Nieuwsma and Sarah Berner, Nolan and Heather Nieuwsma, Kyle and Tosha Nieuwsma, Ross Nieuwsma, , Madeleine Williams, Tyler Simmers and Kennedy Sharp, Tanner and Anna Simmers, Toby and Anna Simmers, Tiahna and Trapper John Simmers, great- grandchildren; Brandi Ritter, Kristen, Tori, and Taryn Fischer, Chloe, Cade, Riley and Bentley Nieuwsma, and Rowan Simmers, two brothers and a sister-in-law;. Peter Van Vugt, Granville, MI, and Norman and Del Van Vugt, Huron, SD, his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Laverne Salzer, Missouri, Eunice and Joey Rossi, Nebraska, Lorraine Van Beek Nebraska, and Lawrence and Jeannie Fish, Oklahoma and many special nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, five siblings and their spouses; Edward and Pauline Van Vugt, Ann and Isaac Dornbush, Angeline and John Vander Laan, Helen and Charles Dornbush, his brothers and sisters-in-law; Rita Van Vugt, Floyd and Clarice Fish, Bill Close, Clarence Van Beek, and Walt Salzer, a grandson; Chad Van Vugt-McGovern, and a great grandson; Fred Fischer III. He loved good food, a good visit, and a good laugh.
