John W. Werner, 89, Bismarck, formerly of Linton, died June 25, 2017, with his wife at his side, at the Good Samaritan (Augusta Place) Care Center, Bismarck. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 29, at the Linton United Methodist Church with burial at 3:00 p.m. at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.John was born on June 3, 1928, in Bismarck to Katherine "Katie" (Weber) Werner and the late John Werner, who passed away days before John's birth. He was raised in Temvik and graduated from Temvik High School in 1947.He served in the Korean Conflict from 1950-52 as a teletype operator and he received an honorable discharge. He returned to the Weber family farm south of Temvik to farm and ranch with his uncle, Frank Weber. He was united in marriage on Aug. 25, 1956, to Lorraine Schatz. Over the years, John raised milk cows, sheep, pigs, chickens, and cattle and was always accompanied by a loyal cattle dog. Additionally, he grew wheat and other small grains. He had a knack for repairing farm equipment and often created his own inventions to solve mechanical issues by welding, grinding, and "rigging." He had a mechanical mind and was a great three-dimensional thinker. He farmed with his uncle Frank Weber, who was a father figure. His life partner Lorraine farmed and ranched by his side and they were an incredible team along with "the boys" David and Tom. During harvest, his four children spent many hours with him in the cab of his John Deere 95 combine. They lived on the farm until 1994 when they retired and moved to Linton. In his retirement years, he continued daily commutes to the farm to care for numerous quarter horses and "fix, sort, and putter" at the farm. His military service remained important to him through his life. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and V.F.W., was a past commander of the Dan R. Richardson Post 54, and served on the FHA board. He served on various church boards, and he and Lorraine were very involved members of the Linton United Methodist Church. John was very witty, had a big smile and a wonderful laugh, often with shaking shoulders. He loved to tell jokes and hear a good story. In his younger years he fished and hunted. He enjoyed playing gin rummy, cribbage, bridge, and pinochle. He enjoyed his six grandchildren immensely and had a special relationship with each one. He was known to don a princess crown to play with Katie and Emma, and gave tractor rides to Erin, Brett, Kurt and Reed. The seven Humann kids were like a second set of children. John was very friendly and engaging. He never met a stranger and was known to strike up conversations with strangers at the Kirkwood Mall while Lorraine shopped. His favorite topic was farming and ranching. He is survived by his wife of almost 61 years, Lorraine, Bismarck; his sons, David (Tony Valdez), Chicago, Illinois; and Tom (Cam Strom), Linton; his daughters, Holly (Jerry) Holinka, Dickinson, and Heidi (Brad) Ressler, Coon Rapids, Minn.; his grandchildren: Erin Holinka (Andrew Baldridge), Brett Holinka (Amanda Mulder) and Kurt (Andrea) Holinka; Reed Werner; and Katie and Emma Ressler; one great-grandson, Hudson John Holinka; and a very special niece, Gayle Humann. He is also survived by his in-laws: Elaine Schatz, Wahpeton, Ray Humann, Hazelton, and Herman (Sharon) Schatz, Oshkosh, Wis.; numerous nieces and nephews and their special friends Frank and Marlene Purintun.He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Geraldine. Also preceding him were Lorraine's parents, John and Emma (Serr) Schatz; his brothers-in-law, John Schatz, James Schatz and Robert Schatz; and sisters-in-law, Loretta (Schatz) Humann and Darlene (Humann) Schatz.In lieu of flowers, make a connection with someone who has impacted your life.
