Obituary

Joseph Joe Materi, Strasburg, ND, died Tuesday, December 7, 2010 in the Strasburg Care Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 11, 2010 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Strasburg, ND with Rev. Paul Eberle and Rev. Albert Leary officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, ND. There will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Visitation will continue Saturday for one hour before service time at the church. Joseph Joe was born February 8, 1928 to Jacob and Josephine (Bichler) Materi. He grew up on the family farm one mile west of Strasburg, where he graduated from high school in 1947. Joe worked for the American Republic Insurance Company until entering the US Army. He served during the Korean War from 1950 until 1952. Joe married Bernadette Bernie Keller on August 7, 1950 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Strasburg. They ranched and farmed on Joes parents farm. Bernie died August 30, 2008. Joe was a resident of the Strasburg Care Center since June, 2008, where he died on December 7, 2010. He was active in both state and community organizations, including Emmons County FHA, Farmers Elevator Board, ND Beef and Dairy Commission, and BEK Director for 15 years. Joe was a life member of the Strasburg VFW and Linton American Legion and a member of the Strasburg Lions Club. He was instrumental in the development of Veterans Memorial Park in Strasburg. Joe enjoyed reading and working outdoors. He is survived by his children: Carol and Norman Neis of Hague, ND, Dan Materi of Strasburg, ND, Sandi and Fuzzy Feist of Linton, ND, Wayne and Sue Materi of Bismarck, ND, Pam and Al Hulm of Linton, ND and Annette and Kent Fetzer of Mandan, ND; seven grandchildren: Nancy (Jed) Olson, Jason, Travis, Jaden Materi, Ashlee Feist, Whitney and Lindsey Hulm and one great granddaughter, Jessica Olson; one brother: Albert Materi of Spokane, WA; one sister and brother-in-law: Marie Materi and Fred Brandauer of Seattle, WA and several nieces and nephews. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 2008, three brothers, Alex, Baldwin and Pete, and one sister, Agnes Mitzel.
