Katherine "Katie" Klein, 96, formerly of Zeeland, ND, passed away on February 16, 2017, at the Strasburg Care Center, Strasburg, ND.Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am on Friday, February 24, 2017, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Zeeland, with Fr. Katanga officiating.Burial will be held at St. John's Cemetery.Visitation will be held at the church in Zeeland on Thursday, February, 23, from 6-9 pm with a Rosary/Prayer Service at 7:00 pm.Katie was born on June 10, 1920, in Hague, ND, to Adam and Katherine (Schmidt) Gabriel. She grew up on the family farm east of Hague and attended rural school through the 8th grade. She married Daniel Klein on October 15, 1941, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hague, and they were happily married for 70 years. After their wedding, they lived in Aberdeen, SD, for 3 years. Dan served in the US Navy during WWII, and was stationed in Florida and New Orleans. Katie, with sons Dan and Bob, accompanied him during his New Orleans assignment. After Dan's military discharge in 1946, they made their home on the Klein family farm 6 miles north of Zeeland. Katie was a farm wife, helping with field work and farm chores until Dan became the Zeeland Postmaster in 1966.In 2005, Katie and Dan moved to Bismarck, ND, where they lived in an apartment before moving to Marillac Manor Independent Living in 2009. They lived there until Katie moved to the Strasburg Care Center in October of 2015.A consummate mother and homemaker, Katie was an excellent cook and baker, and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends. She was an excellent quilter and seamstress, making quilts for her children, grandchildren and friends. Katie loved to dance and visit and was an excellent pinochle player. She was also a sports fan and enjoyed watching and cheering for the Minnesota Twins baseball team.Katie had an unwavering faith in God. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, north of Zeeland, and then later St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Zeeland. She was a lifetime member of the St. John's and St. Andrew's Christian Mothers.Katie is survived by 3 sons, Robert J. (Cheryl), Gerald J. (Beverly) and Allan A. (Cathy); daughter-in-law, Pat Klein; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Wilfred Eberle; and many nieces and nephews. Katie appreciated and loved the many friends and friendships in her lifetime, especially John and Kathy Meier, their son Mike, and daughters, Lenora Pella and Jackie Darr. Katie was preceded in death by her husband, Dan; an infant son; son, Daniel James; daughter, Brenda Kay; grandsons, Robert Anthony Klein and Gregory James Klein; her parents; sisters, Ann Mitzel, Mary Weigel and Helen Eberle; and brothers, Joseph, Ambrose and Frank Gabriel.In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew's Christian Mothers.
