Services will be held Saturday, February 1, 2020 11:00 a.m. at the Pollock Memorial Presbyterian Church.

There will be a prayer service on Friday, January 31, 2020 at 7:00 p.m., also at the church. Please bring a favorite memory or story to share.

Burial will take place in the spring at Kvarness Cemetery.

Kathryn Ruth (Van Heukelom) Lovo was born June 20, 1924  to Dick and Jeannette (Huisingh) Van Heukelom.  Jeannette passed away in 1926 so Kathryn lived with her grandparents Elizabeth and John Brandt Van Heukelom until her dad remarried several years later.  Kathryn as a teenager worked as a hired girl for several families with new babies in the Westfield/Hull area to help do the cleaning, laundry and care of the family while mother was recuperating. Christmas of 1943 she met an Army guy on leave while roller skating in Westfield and on September 19, 1947 she married that Army guy, Odvel Lovo, who had just returned home from the Army. They bought a small home in Pollock and raised two daughters, Jeanette and Theresa there. Kathryn worked many jobs in her lifetime, sometimes two jobs – one early morning, come home when we were getting up and then go to the second job at her brother-in-law Neller's. Though she always said she was uneducated; she self-taught many trades in her life. She worked at all the restaurants Pollock ever had, to include Rosie's in old Pollock, Irene's in the new town, Pollock Café, West Pollock; waitressing was her favorite job. Then she learned all the parts and pieces of plumbing, etc. in the hardware store.  One day Eldredge MacKay at the Pollock Pioneer asked her to work for him and she said she couldn't type; he dropped a typewriter and book by the house and said "learn to type and then come to work" – and she did! She helped at the Union school, the Pollock elementary, mowed lawns, painted houses, cleaned houses and ironed for others.

In her spare time, she sewed quilts to donate to the Women's Shelter in Mobridge or to give to high school graduates, painted Bob Vetsch's yard art, and helped the foot care nurse.  She was a lifetime, 71+ years, member/officer of the Auxiliary in Pollock, was in the Past Presidents group and was Poppy Chairman for 50++ years.   She was part of a Circle group at Pollock Memorial Presbyterian Church for many years. She loved being busy and spent many hours helping put the church "back together again" after the major renovation in the fall of 2019.  A high point in her life was a trip in 2014 when she took her daughters and their husbands to The Netherlands and Norway where we not only enjoyed touring, but also meeting cousins in the Lovo family.

Kathryn is survived by her two daughters: Jeanette (Ken) Vander Wal and Theresa (Clarence) Fjeldheim; 7 grandchildren - David (Ramona) Vander Wal, Mike (Gina) Vander Wal, Heather (Steven) Mincy, Lance (Geralynn) Fjeldheim, Stephanie Fjeldheim (Michael McCarty), Brandon (Ana) Fjeldheim and Renae (Kris) Schiele; 21 great grandchildren – Gage (& Candace), Grant (& Brook), Elaine (& Derrek), Erika, Zane (& Taishia), Micaela (& Shayne), Jacob, Adrianna, Kendra,  Samantha (& Jessie), Bradley, Hadyn, Andrew, Karissa, Kiana, Kameron, Grayden, Andrew, Meghan, Xavier and Zoe; 5 great-great grandchildren – Owen, Perrin, Avalynn, Liam and Remi with another great-great granddaughter, Brooke, due in February. She is also survived by her brothers – Bernice, Willis, Jerome, Leroy and Roger; one brother-in-law, Dennis, and one sister, Elizabeth as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, nephews, cousins almost too numerous to make an accurate count.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband, Odvel, mother, father, sister Pearl Miller, brothers Jerald and Glen; step-sister Loretta Compaan sisters-in-law Bertha, Diane, Judy, Ardyth and Jeanette; brothers-in-law Lavern Compaan and Louis Dykema; great-great grandsons – Kaiden, Kaden and Kyler.
