Kent Nieuwsma passed away on Wednesday July 20, 2016 at the age of 52 after a fast and furious battle with liver cancer.Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 23, 2016 at Hull Christian Reformed Church, Hull, ND. Burial will be in Hull Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, ND. A complete obituary will be forthcoming. Kent was born on March 23, 1964 to Franklin & Gracey (Vander Vorst) Nieuwsma of rural Strasburg ND. He attended Bakker Grade School until grade 7 and graduated from Strasburg High School in 1982.Kent loved to see the world. After high school he lived in Texas, South Dakota, California and Minnesota, making friends wherever he went. Kent was known for his big heart, big smile and even bigger laugh!He enjoyed working with cattle on the farm; Charolais being his favorite breed. He worked at the Herried Livestock Market in the past and on a dairy farm in Texas. Kent had a natural knack for cooking, in fact he worked as a cook during his travels. It was probably his talent in the kitchen that made him the talented bartender that he was until the end.Kent is survived by his parents, Franklin and Gracey; brother Lee (special friend Cindy Ternes), all of rural Strasburg; sister Cindy (husband Dennis) Drengson of Mandan; nephews Cole, Parker and Jackson; niece Calisa. Kent was very lucky to have a large extended family with many surviving aunts, uncles and cousins on both the Nieuwsma and Vander Vorst sides.Kent was preceded in death by his grandparents William and Bertha Nieuwsma and Ed C. and Minnie Vander Vorst.
