Lavern Shillingstad, 89, formerly of Herreid, SD, died December 15, 2011 at the Selby Good Samaritan Center, Selby, SD. Funeral services will be held at 10:30am on Monday, December 19, 2011 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Herreid with Fr. Thomas Clement officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 6pm to 9pm at the church in Herreid. There will be a prayer service at 7:00pm. Lavern was born on April 23, 1922 on a farm in Campbell County, SD, the son of Perry and Agnes (Veriede) Shillingstad. He was raised on a farm northeast of Mobridge. He attended school in Mobridge and graduated from the Mobridge High School in 1940. Lavern married Bertha Schaefbauer in Herreid on September 4, 1945. Lavern worked for area farmers before purchasing his own farm in Walworth County in 1943. He also worked for the railroad and helped his parents on their farm. They moved to a farm east of Herreid in 1949, then they bought a farm from Ben and John Schaefbauer. Lavern also worked for Campbell County. They moved into Herreid in 1971 and Lavern worked for the City of Herreid and the cement plant. He also helped build the elevator and sales barn and the Pollock Causeway. Lavern enjoyed watching television, especially game shows and "Funniest Home Videos" He is survived by a son, Joe Shillingstad and special friend, Debbie Lookingback of Herreid, SD; four daughters and sons-in-law: Irene Shillingstad, Mobridge, SD, Monica and Earl Markwed, Aurora, SD, Lorraine and Clay Olson, Fargo, ND and Roberta and Steve Berg, Henry, SD; eleven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; three brothers and a sister-in-law: Dean and Phyllis Shillingstad, Selby, SD, Edward Shillingstad, Mobridge, SD and Warren Shillingstad, Mobridge, SD; one sister and brother-in-law: Caroline and Jim Grad, Kent, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; two daughters: Mary Ann and Verna; seven brothers: Glen, Roy, Lawrence, Norman, Harold, Lee and Lyman; four sisters: Aggie, May, Mona and Vivian.
