Leo was born January 9, 1938, to Valentine and Helen (Welk) Mastel, on the family farm in Hague, North Dakota. Leo lived a life full of love, laughter, and faith. Leo's early years were defined by hard work, growing up on the farm where he developed a deep appreciation for the land and an unwavering work ethic. On November 7, 1960, Leo married the love of his life, Rita Mitzel, at St. Andrews Catholic Church in Zeeland. Over the next eight years they welcomed three sons: Dean, and twins Donald and Daniel.
Leo carried the value of hard work into his career as a farmer, dedicating his life to tending the land and providing for his family. In addition to caring for the land and his family, he cared for his community. He was an active member of the Lions Club and Knights of Columbus (4th degree). Leo enjoyed gardening & canning, butchering, playing cards, cooking & baking, and watching the Price is Right & Wheel of Fortune.
Leo was a man of virtue and deep faith, a devout Catholic who lived his beliefs daily. His steadfast faith touched the lives of everyone who knew him. Known for his quick wit and warm humor, Leo had a gift for making others laugh. He was a jokester to the very end, delighting everyone, including his hospital caretakers, with his humor.
Welcoming him into eternal life are his twin sons, Donald and Daniel; parents, Valentine and Helen; in-laws, Annie and Simon Mitzel; siblings, Aloys (Angie) Mastel, Willie (Virginia) Mastel, and Duane (Carlene) Mastel; three brothers in-law Pius Hulm, Leo Kramer, and Willie Voller; and many other cherished family members and friends.
