Lon Fjeldheim, 54, of Herreid, SD, passed away peacefully on Christmas Eve morning, Wednesday, December 24, 2014, surrounded by his family at the same facility he was born, Bowdle Healthcare Center, Bowdle, SD. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 29, 2014 at First Reformed Church in Herreid with Rev. Dan Schnabel officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery, Herreid. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at the church.Lon Dean Fjeldheim was born on September 24, 1960 to Earl and Judy (Werner) Fjeldheim. Lon spent his childhood on the farm where his grandparents, Earl and Ramona Werner had previously lived. He attended school in Herreid graduating with the class of 1978.For a short time, Lon moved to Watertown, SD attending Lake Area Votech. His heart remained in Campbell County and he returned home to his passion, farming.On June 6, 1981 Lon married Paula Perman at the First Reformed Church in Herreid. They made their home on the family farm, where he raised cattle and farmed. In 1997 he and Paula moved into Herried, bringing his livestock with them.In 1999, after 18 years of marriage, the highlight of his life happened and his daughter Beth was born. When Beth was only 3 years old, Lon was diagnosed with Primary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis. He and Paula sought medical care at Mayo, Minneapolis, Aberdeen and Bismarck, receiving the same diagnosis at each facility: that there was no help available.The life expectancy given to him at that time was 5 years. Due to the excellent care given by family and caregivers, along with the grace of God, Lon was able to stay in his home until recently, exceeding his life expectancy by several years.When able to, Lon attended sporting events, when homebound he watched them on TV, along with Herreid Livestock sales on Friday. Lon especially enjoyed watching the Minnesota Vikings, his favorite team. He also had a reputation of being a prankster. Many friends and family have stories of things he has done.Lon spent several years working at Herreid Livestock. He also worked for Alvin Fjeldheim in the fields. He was then employed at North Central Farmer Elevator until 2004 when his health declined. At that time he began delivering the Aberdeen American News until his walk and balance began to fail.Lon is survived by his wife of 33 years, Paula; daughter, Beth; parents, Earl and Judy Fjeldheim, all of Herreid; sister, Lori (Dan Materi) Bechtold; 2 brothers, Kim (Wendy) Fjeldheim and Kent (Brandee) Fjeldheim; sisters-in-law, Nola (Doug) Goehring and Jill (Brad Hales) Perman; brother-in-law, Kirk (Lori) Perman; special mother-in-law, Marion Goehring; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and many special nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Earl and Ramona Werner, and Andrew and Arlouine Fjeldheim; and brother-in-law, John Bechtold, Jr.On December 24, 2014 God came up with something more special for Lon other than shots or medication Christmas in Heaven, walking, talking, singing, and playing jokes on his loved ones who are there.
