Manard was born in Linton, ND on September 26, 1927, the son of John and Christina (Maier) Flegel. Manard started working for the Northern Pacific Railroad at the age of 17 and attained the title of Railroad Section Foreman. On December 14, 1952, he married Bernice Baker in Linton, ND. Together they raised two children, Diane and Terry. Manard loved to hunt deer and shoot gophers. He was part of a band, called the Dakota Troupadors, where he played guitar. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Hazelton where he served as a Deacon and Elder. Manard died on August 12, 2011 at the Linton Hospital. He had been living at the Strasburg Care Center since October of 2010 due to diminishing health. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Bernice of Hazelton, ND; a daughter and son-in-law: Diane and Dennis Kuss of Champlin, MN; a granddaughter and husband: Deanna (Kuss) and Steve Enstad of Andover, MN; two sisters: Mavis Huizenga of Westfield, ND and Darlene Shaw of Beaverton, OR; a brother and sister-in-law: Vernon and Florence Flegel of Arvada, CO. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Christina Flegel; son, Terry Flegel; a brother, Arnold Flegel and a sister, Lorraine Jose
