Marilyn Vander Vorste, 82, Pollock, SD, died Saturday, May 20, 2017. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 25, 2017 at Pollock Memorial Presbyterian Church, Pollock, with Rev. Floyd Haan officiating. Burial will be in Spring Valley Cemetery, Pollock. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the church where there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Marilyn Jane Fish (Knudson) Vander Vorste was born on May 16, 1935 in Grand Forks, ND. She was a precious gift to Jake and Minnie (Vanderlaan) Fish of Pollock, SD. Jake's pride and joy, he referred to her as his "Dolly." Marilyn attended a small rural one-room school house north of Pollock and graduated from Pollock High School in 1953. After graduation, she attended Northern State College where she was crowned Gypsy Day Queen. In October 1954, Marilyn returned to Pollock to marry Leslie Knudson. They were stationed in California where Les served in the army. They returned to their hometown of Pollock where they started their family of six children on the Knudson family farm. In 1979, just shy of their 25th anniversary, Les passed away. Marilyn married Larry Vander Vorste on Sept 17, 1987, and the two kept busy maintaining their farm and ranch where Marilyn continued to cook for ranch hands. She was a faithful member of the Pollock Memorial Presbyterian church and sang in the choir. Her family and friends meant the world her to her and her smile and laughter were felt throughout the community. Marilyn led a rich and full life with many business endeavors over the years, including farmer, rancher, cook, Pollock High School business manager, grocery store owner and drive-in owner, but her number one job was being a mother and grandmother. Marilyn died on the Knudson family farm on May 20, 2017 at the age of 82. Marilyn is survived by her loving husband Larry Vander Vorste, daughters Cindy (John) Steele, Susan Kightlinger (Bill Durst), sons, Jay (Stacey) Knudson, Jim (Diane) Knudson, David (Dianna) Knudson, Stepson Lee Vander Vorste, grandchildren, Chad Weisbeck, Karie Truitt, Nicole Daniel, Amber Hartman, Shantelle Komorous, Jennifer Hartman, Leslee Maseman, Misty Knudson, Jamie Knudson, Matthew Knudson, Dylan Knudson, Alexa Knudson, Jakob Knudson, Kendra Knudson, Mark Vander Vorste, Stacy Voller, Bo Vander Vorste, and 21 great-grand children. Her sister in life, cousin Arlie Jakobsen, brother-in-law Dr. Allen (Jean) Knudson, sister-in-law Lucille (Sam) Bradley, sister-in-law Rosemary(Kenny Knudson) Cheeney, sister-in-law Arlene (James Knudson) Moncur, brother-in-law Louis (Nedra) Vander Vorste, sister-in-law Marcella (Leroy)Ryckman, sister-in-law, Judy (Brian) Carlson. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, Jake and Minnie Fish, husband Les Knudson, daughter Cathy Hartman, grandson Adam Kightlinger, and infant granddaughter, Danielle Weisbeck.
