Mary F. Volk, 99, of Hague ND, died February 6, 2023 at Sanford Health, Bismarck. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am on Saturday, February 11, 2023, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Hague.  Burial will be held in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Hague.  Visitation will be held on Friday, February 10 ^th from 5pm to 7pm at the church in Hague, with a prayer/vigil service at 7:00pm.

Mary Antonia Miller was born on January 1, 1924 on the Miller Farmstead west of Hague. She was the eldest daughter of Anton J. and Katherine (Wald) Miller.  She was raised on the farm and attended country school.  Although she enjoyed school and loved to learn she was asked to leave school prior to graduating to help work on the farm.  To further help support the family during the "dirty thirties" and beyond, she also worked at the Hague Mercantile.

Mary married Peter F. Volk at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hague on October 28, 1947.  Pete and Mary made their home on a farm northwest of Hague and were blessed with three children.  The farming operation consisted of raising small grains, cattle, hogs and chickens until October 1983 when they built a new house and moved into Hague.

Mary spent practically all but the very earliest years of her life working.  She loved to work, if not in the house then outside. With the exception of the years spent at the mercantile, Mary did farm-related work.  At the mercantile she began her employment by stocking shelves and preparing items for sale and eventually becoming the cashier.  On the farm she took part in practically every area of the operation; milking cows by hand, feeding calves, caring for chickens, doing housework and caring for her family.  During the summer months her work expanded to tending to a large garden, working in the fields, making hay and hauling grain.  Mary was an excellent cook and baker.  Her German potato salad, hamburger rice dressing and a variety of dumplings were family favorites.  After her retirement from farming she began a new line of self-employment, which involved cooking for weddings and other large events within the area.

Her hobbies included; being with and spending time with grandchildren and great-grand-children, working in her kitchen, baking, playing cards, crocheting and gardening.

Mary's Catholic faith was the foundation of her life.  Her rosary was never far away and as long as health allowed, Sunday Mass was mandatory.  She was active in St. Mary's Altar Society and Christian Mothers and took part in many, many annual church fairs, helping where needed.

Proud to have shared in their lives, Mary leaves behind three sons; Jerome (Betty), Bismarck; James, Hague; and Timothy (LeAnn), Linton; seven grand-children and fifteen great-grandchildren; one brother Conrad (Helen) Miller, two sister-in laws, Theresa Miller, Coon Rapids, MN; Agnes Miller, Bismarck; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Peter; seven brothers; Edmund, Robert (at birth) Chester, Robert, John, Jerome (at birth) and Dennis; two sisters, Alice and Ann; and several nephews
