Mathias "Matt" Schneider, age 97, of Linton, North Dakota, died Sunday, October 27, 2019 at the Strasburg Care Center in Strasburg, North Dakota.
Matt was born October 27, 1922, in Zeeland, North Dakota to Mathias Schneider, Sr and Katherine (Wolf) Schneider. Matt attended school in Linton but was unable to graduate with his class due to being drafted into World War II. He was in the U. S. Navy on the USS Amman for 4 years. He was promised his diploma upon his arrival home from the war but finally received it in June 2001 with the then Linton High School graduating class.
Matt was joined in marriage to Frances Schmaltz after his return from the war. To this union four sons were born, Darrell, Thomas, Kevin and William. Frances was diagnosed with cancer and died in April of 1964. Matt worked at Schmaltz Meats and bought a bar known as Schneider's Lounge (the Coolest Place in Town). He met Lucinda Heidrich and the two were joined in marriage in October, 1965. To this union a son, Paul was born.
Matt sold the bar and joined the ranks of the US Postal Service as a rural mail carrier. He worked at this job for 24 years until his retirement, August 31, 1990. He served 20 years in the Linton City government and was a volunteer fireman for over 40 years.
Matt was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Frank, his sister Betty, his wives, Frances and Lucinda and three of his sons, Thomas, William and Paul.
He is survived by his son Darrell (Dorothy) Schneider of Bismarck, North Dakota; his son Kevin (Tammy) Schneider of Hettinger, North Dakota; daughter-in-law, Jocelyn Schneider, Bismarck, North Dakota; 8 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; sisters Mary Mastel of Hazelton, North Dakota, Lillian Stanley of Washington State and Christine along with numerous sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.
