Obituary

Orland Vikse, 88, formerly of Pollock, SD, died Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at the Linton Hospital. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, September 24, 2011 at Pollock Lutheran church, Pollock, with Pastor Ramona Hayes officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday from 1:00pm to 4:00pm at the Myers Funeral Home, Linton and from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at the church with a prayer service at 7:30pm. Orland was born May 21, 1923 in Emmons County, ND, the son of Knute and Milda (Grannes) Vikse. He attended country school to the 6th grade. He and his family moved to Idaho for a few years. They came back to South Dakota where he graduated from Pollock High School in 1942. Following graduation he took over the family farm . Orland married Mary Lou Clark in Pollock, SD on September 14, 1947. Following their marriage, they lived and farmed on the family farm until 1954 when they moved into Pollock. Orland worked at the Gambles Store in Pollock, he also worked construction. They returned to farming in 1963. In 1967 they purchased a ranch where they lived for 20 years. Orland raised Polled Hereford Cattle and drove school bus. He retired in 1987 and they moved into Pollock. During his retirement he was a mission builder for the Lutheran Church on 3 projects. He was a very talented builder and repairman and shared his talent with his family and neighbors. Orland and Mary Lou enjoyed going on bus tours, traveling to every state except 8. He was a member of Pollock Lutheran Church. He enjoyed gardening, yard work, hunting, fishing and spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou, Pollock, SD; his son and daughter-in-law: Jim and Lynn Vikse, Craig, CO; two daughters and sons-in-law: Wilma and Dean Jaycox, Fargo, ND and Lois and Paul Johnson, Marshall, MN; eleven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; sister, Beatrice Reierson, Pollock, SD and a brother-in-law, Edwin Heckelsmiller, Blackwell, OK; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law: Betty Johnson, Pierre, SD and Joan and Jack DeBruyn, Raleigh, NC, . He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Gene Orland, a grandson, Clark Vikse; granddaughter, Amy Vikse and a sister, LaVerna Heckelsmiller; brothers-in-law: Elmer Reierson and Lloyd Johnson.
