Robert "Bob" Schreiner, 93, Strasburg, ND, died Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at Strasburg Care Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 5, 2016 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Strasburg. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the church where there will be a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.Robert "Bob" William Schreiner was born April 30, 1923 in Bismarck, ND to Jacob and Elizabeth (Malsom) Schreiner, the second born of five children. As a young boy, Bob delivered the Minneapolis Tribune. He attended school and graduated from Strasburg Public School. He played high school basketball and as a young man he played clarinet in a local band. Following graduation in 1941, Bob attended machinist's school in Ellendale and then went to work in the Puget Sound Navy Yard in Bremerton, Washington through the National Youth Administration (NYA), expecting to be drafted into service during WWII. Since he was working in a field critical to the military, he was given a deferment for a while. When he was about to be drafted in 1941, he was allowed to return home to Strasburg to enter the service. Bob entered the US Navy and was assigned to Guam as a Seabee on December 16, 1943. He received an honorable discharge on June 13, 1946.Bob returned from service and married the love of his life, Regina Schumacher, the daughter of Michael and Helena Schumacher, at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Strasburg on August 6, 1946. They had three children, Roberta Ann, Michele Helene and Mark James.Bob attended business college in Bismarck and worked in accounting at the State Insurance Department. Jean worked at the Bank of North Dakota. They moved to Williston, where Bob sold appliances at the local Gambles store. In 1950, they noticed an ad in the Emmons County Record looking for someone to open a Gambles store in Strasburg. They got the job and spent the summer preparing to open their store where the present day Strasburg Post Office is located. In 1952 due to expanding inventory, they moved the store to their present location, which was formerly Emmons County Motors. The timing of this move was also the when television became available in Strasburg. In 1987, their son, Mark, purchased the business and changed the name to Schreiners Hardware and Furniture. Bob and Jean remained active in the store, helping out, while they eased into retirement life.Bob was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Family meant the world to him. He was an avid golfer, and enjoyed spending time golfing with Lawrence Welk. Bob loved trips with family and friends, calling Bingo, music (especially Lawrence Welk music) and above all he loved to talk, if it meant a "Sale".Bob was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, VFW Post # 6264, church choir, various boards including City of Strasburg, Strasburg Care Center and numerous civic groups. Through his involvement in the various groups he was instrumental in getting the Strasburg Care Center built. He was also a liaison between Lawrence Welk in getting the Welk Pool and Park built.Bob is survived by his son, Mark, Strasburg, and special friend, Wanda Lovik; his daughter, Roberta Neal, Florida; granddaughter, Alyssa Heck and grandson, Weston Schreiner.Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Regina, his daughter, Michele, his parents, an infant brother, Carl, three sisters Martha, Helen and Rose Mary, four brothers-in-law, four sisters-in-law and his mother-in-law and father-in-law.
