Rose was born August 19, 1929, on a farm southwest of Strasburg, North Dakota. Rose was the fourth daughter of Magnus and Mary (Mitzel) Wagner. She was raised and educated at the country school west of Strasburg until eighth grade. As a young girl, Rose played organ for services at Holy Trinity Catholic Church under the guidance of Father Zelder. When she was fifteen, Rose fell ill with Rheumatic Fever. This illness permanently damaged her heart, and doctors predicted she would be bedridden or at best confined to her home. Rose defied the doctors' predictions and grew stronger every day until she was able to live a normal life. As a young woman, Rose enjoyed going to dances with her friends and sisters. It was at one of these dances that Rose met her friend and future husband Anton Albert Volk.
Rose married Anton on June 20, 1955, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Krassna, ND. They farmed for a short time before moving to Strasburg. Due to her weakened heart, doctors advised Rose not to have children. However, Rose had faith in God and once again defied the doctors' orders. Together Rose and Albert had six children: Cindy, David, Donald, Daniel, Duane, and Connie. Rose raised her family and did some babysitting for family and friends. She remembered this time as being very happy. Rose and Anton were married for 31 years. Anton died on July 22, 1986.
Rose was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Saint Mary's Society, Strasburg VFW Auxiliary, the Spirituality Committee at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Strasburg Senior Citizen Center, and the Catholic Social Action Committee at Saints Peter and Paul Church. Rose enjoyed embroidering, sewing, volunteering at the Strasburg Care Center, playing cards, and visiting with family and friends. Those who knew Rose described her as faithful, patient, persistent through adversity, humble, and kind. She also had an amazing memory.
She is survived by her children, Cynthia (Gregory) Salwei, David (Bonnie) Volk, Donald (Janette) Volk, Daniel Volk, Duane Volk, and Constance Volk; grandchildren, Shelly (Donald) Kosiak, David (Sonia) Salwei, Miranda (Grant) Mehrer, Hunter (Jenna) Volk, Eden Volk, Grace Volk, Jennifer (Roger) Neshem, Stephanie (Tayton) Kramer, Brandon (Ali) Volk, Vanessa Volk, Cody (Jessica) Volk, Kaicey (Michael) von Stockhausen, Katie Volk, and Trista (Chauncey) Hughes; twenty-four great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; brother, Magnus (Ann) Wagner and sister, Arlene Kramer; brother-in-law, Leo Sehn and sisters-in-law, Florence Tough (Gartner), Joanie Volk, Lil Volk, Claudia Volk Donna Volk, and Sylvia Volk.
