Sebastian Bernhardt, 93, formerly of Linton, ND, died Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Edgewood Vista, Bismarck, ND, under the care of Loving Hearts Home Care. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 4, 2016 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Linton, ND with Rev. Jason Signalness officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery with military rites provided by the Linton American Legion Post 54. Visitation will be on Thursday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Myers Funeral Home, and continue from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the church, where there will be a rosary and prayer service at 7 p.m.Sebastian was born on December 30, 1922, eleven miles east of Temvik, ND, the son of William and Rosie (Kuntz) Bernhardt. Sebastian was eager to learn. He attended country school through the 8th grade. After convincing his parents that he wanted to further his education, he moved to Strasburg, ND and lived with his Grandmother, in order to attend high school. He graduated from Strasburg High School in 1942. After graduation he taught in a one room school house one half mile east of where he grew up. In July 1945, he was drafted into the US Navy, where he was a Discharge Clerk at the Charleston, SC Naval Base. After his discharge in August 1946, he returned to North Dakota where he continued teaching for two more years, having some of his brothers and sisters as students. Sebastian married the love of his life, Magdalena Piatz, on June 2, 1947 at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, rural Burnstad, ND. Following their marriage, they farmed from 1948-1991, together raising a family of ten children. Developing a love for farming, Sebastian was blessed to bring in 43 harvests during his farming years. After his retirement, Sebastian and Maggie moved to Linton, ND and he continued to help on the family farm until 2010. Sebastian was active at St. Michael's Catholic Church of rural Linton, ND, where he was baptized and made his First Holy Communion, and where he later brought his family to weekly Sunday Mass. Upon retirement, Sebastian later became a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church. He was an honorary life member of 59 years to the Knights of Columbus, serving as Grand Knight in 1978 and 1979 and later became a Fourth Degree Knight. He was a 43 year member of Linton American Legion, Linton School Board member for 15 years (9 years as chairman). Sebastian served as president for the Emmons County Farm Bureau Board of Directors. He was a member of the ND Milk Producers Association and became chair of that organization as well. He also served as a Director of the Linton Fire District for several years as well as the Clerk of the Wood Township Board.Sebastian enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, often reading books and singing to them. His favorite song being, "You are my Sunshine." He enjoyed traveling, crossword puzzles, taking road trips, and checking crops with Maggie, his wife of nearly 69 years. Sebastian's love for his wife continues to be an inspiration for his children and grandchildren. He had a passion for reading and golfing. Instead of missing out on a round of golf on Ladies Night, Sebastian and his golf buddies formed a traveling men's group and would play various courses in the area. Sebastian is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Magdalena "Maggie" Bernhardt, Bismarck, ND; five sons and daughters-in-law, David and Sarah Bernhardt, Wishek, ND, Daniel and Brenda Bernhardt, Valley City, ND, Thomas and Tamie Bernhardt, Linton, ND, Ronald and Jamie Bernhardt, Bismarck, ND, and Michael and Julie Bernhardt, Bismarck, ND; five daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and Victor Weigel, Fargo, ND, Diane and Duane Frank, Shields, ND, Donna and James Wald, Fergus Falls, MN, Norleen and Wayne Schafer, Flasher, ND and Mary and Glenn Jacobson, Finley, ND; 34 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Anton & Sally Bernhardt, Linton, ND, George and Arliss Bernhardt, Bismarck, ND, William and Veronica Bernhardt, Milwaukee, OR; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Alvina and Joe Schaff, Frances and Eusebius Kuntz, Phyllis and August Werner, and Rose Marie and Leonard Sperle, all of Bismarck, ND, as well as many nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; grandchildren, Tracy Weigel, Joshua Bernhardt, Levi Bernhardt and Darron Frank; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Lee (Ellie) and Jacob "Jackie," and two sisters, Helen Bernhardt and Regina Bernhardt.The family wishes to thank Tracy and her care staff at Edgewood Vista and the staff of Loving Hearts Home Care, for their excellent devotion and kindness.You may share memories and condolences with the family at the Myers Funeral Home website: www.myersfh.com
