Sherlene B. Nolz, 59, of Mandan, ND, died October 26, 2024, at Sunset Drive Prospera Community Care Center, Mandan. A memorial service will be held Friday, November 1, 2024, at 10:30 AM at Sannes Feist Family Funeral Home, Linton. Burial will be held at St. Mary's Cemetery, Hague, ND. There will also be a memorial service held on Monday, November 4, 2024 from 10:00 - 11:30 AM at Good Samaritan Society - Sunset Drive 1011 Boundary St NW, Mandan, ND.

Sherlene was born June 25, 1965, to Francis and Anna (Zahn) Nolz. She was welcomed home by three siblings on the family farm. She enjoyed farm life more than anyone will ever know. Her favorite time of the year was Spring. Springtime was the time for new birth. There wasn't a baby animal that she didn't cherish or want to nurture. Life on the farm for Sherlene was simple. She was always able to see the good in just about everything, even a box of raccoons that we found in a field. She would take care of them until one day they disappeared. By far the horse was her favorite animal. She studied horses, collected horses, read about horses, colored horses and watched horse events at an arena near her apartment for hours. It was always fascinating to listen to her share statistics about the various breeds of horses. The horse breeds strong points, the challenges owners experienced, the main use of the specific breed. A horse running free on the prairie was a pure delight for her.

Sherlene graduated from Linton High School and moved to Bismarck shortly after graduation. She held positions with Pride Incorporate for many years. She lived independently and made many friends through work and in the Bismarck community. Her treasured place of employment was the Elks. She would be there at the crack of dawn and work feverishly to make sure her assignments were completed in a timely manner. She would find random dollar bills in the parking lot, hallways and other places around the Elks. She had a big heart and would always turn that money into the office, just in case someone would stop by requesting it. After some time, the money was returned to Sherlene and her honesty was appreciated. She loved to be out with friends, and she was one of the kindest people you could ever have in your court. There were many times she put the needs of a random stranger before her own needs.

Attention to detail and an attention for details was a trait about Sherlene and many would marvel. Before we had Google, we had Sherlene. Sherlene could recall dates better than anyone in the family. She could recite football scores, statistics and player information that was mind blowing. There was a period where she had all the Super Bowl teams, final score, quarterback and location of the game locked into memory. It was crazy, how she could retain all that information. If you told her a story and tried to change the ending in the future, she would be able to correct you and maybe even give you the date when you told her the story in the first place. She would be the first one to call us family members on our birthday, anniversary and every holiday.

Sherlene became a resident at Good Samaritan Society – Sunset Drive in 2018. While a resident there, she got to know that staff. She was able to make friends easily. Every day she would participate in the activities of the home. As she reported to family members, they all were her favorites. Sitting at the top was bingo. Her bingo winnings were always reported to the family. Through the years the family was able to tell how many blackouts, straight bingos or specialty bingos she won on a particular day. Jam sessions, carnival games, craft projects and Sunset Olympics were always a highlight. She missed very few activities while she was a resident.

She loved it when family came to visit and anytime a dog was in the house, she was one of the first people to talk to the handler and then the dog. Sherlene always requested a visit from Sheila's dog, Nikon. Their bond was priceless, especially when he walked alongside her in the wheelchair, you could see happiness on her face. When not busy with activities, she could be found in her room, reading books, working on latch hook projects, putting together puzzles, word find puzzles and coloring. Every day she strived to do something a bit different. John Grisham was one of her favorite authors; she must have had every book he wrote. Country, Old time and Christian music filled the quiet in her room. She absolutely loved sharing her art with those around her. Through the years she sold many latch hook rugs to friends and community members. She kept meticulous track of where she was on every project. She was working on a very large latch hook rug that was left undone. One thing we do know is that she was on row 109. One of the staff members asked if she could finish the project and put it on display in her honor. Yes, was the answer.

A simple life lived with wonderment, kindness and a willingness to do her best. Even though she struggled with mobility, you would never have known. In her words, she was always doing fine and did so with a smile when you locked eyes with Sherlene.

Sherlene will be missed by sister; Sheila (Gordon) Herman, brother; Steven Nolz all of Bismarck, ND. Nieces; Ariana (Travis) Pearson, Moorhead, MN, Ashley Rohrich, Lincoln, ND; nephews; Brandon Nolz, RJ Keller, and Jacob Herman Bismarck, ND.

She was preceded in death by her parents Anna and Francis Nolz, brothers Sheldon and Sherwin. Grandparents, Anna and Andrew Nolz, Barbara and Constantine Zahn; and niece, Myia Rae Herman.
