Shirley Rose Strand was born to Edward and Emilia (Pfeifle) Kosel, at their farm home southeast of Ellendale, ND, on September 23, 1932. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Ellendale. She attended country grade school until the 8th grade. She worked at F.W. Woolworth as a baker, in Bismarck, ND, for many years.

She also had a strong love of farm animals. Whether it was her cows, labs or cats, she always enjoyed her time with them. Her calm and gentle spirit was sure to make an impression when visiting with her. Most of all, Shirley loved reading God's word and spending time with her family, friends, and neighbors.
