Sylvester Syl Zahn, 92, Linton, died Thursday, April 15, 2010 at the Linton Hospital. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 19, 2010 at St. Anthonys Catholic Church, Linton, ND, with Rev. Gary Benz officiating. Burial will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND. Military honors will be given by Linton American Legion. Visitation will be Sunday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Myers Funeral Home, Linton, where there will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour before service time on Monday at the church. Syl was born June 1, 1917 in the Linton Hospital, the son of Anton and Franziska (Volk) Zahn. Syl grew up west of Linton on a farm by the Missouri River. He was theninth child of 11 siblings. He loved music, even as a young boy, he played many different instruments, but the accordion was his favorite. Syl served as a medic in World War II, and was captured as a prisoner of war in Italy for 14 months. He received many medals of honor and the Purple Heart. Upon honorable discharge, Syl married Helen Jahner on December 23, 1946 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Krassna. Syl and Helen moved to Linton in 1947 and had three daughters, Gladys, Karen and Rhonda. Syl worked for KEM Electric as lineman for 33 years and custodian for 14 years. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Catholic Order of Foresters, Knights of Columbus. He was a bowler for many years and loved baseball, especially the Minnesota Twins. Syl enjoyed playing cards, especially Pinochle. He also loved spending time with his family. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be greatly missed. Syl is survived by his wife of 63 years: Helen of Linton; three daughters: Gladys (Dennis) Krumm of Mandan, ND and their children, Yvette and Jeff Humann, Derick, Ryan and Megan of Hazelton, Tiffany and Rick Perrin, Nick, Whitney, and Katie of Bismarck, John and Marsha Krumm, Abby, Emily and Jake of Fargo, Paul and Kristi Krumm and Gracie of Ft. Collins, CO; Karen (Kyle) Gradin of Hensler, and their children, Kyla of Fargo, Kelly and Jill Gress, Karter and Kole of Fargo; and Rhonda (Dan) Delzer of Minot, ND and their children, Tiana and Brooke; two brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law: Clarence and Betty Jahner of Bismarck, Ann Zahn of Linton, Victoria Bosch of Linton, Delores Jahner of Bismarck and Ralph Bosch of Bismarck, as well as several nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Joe, Peter, Frank, Connie and Tony, five sisters, Katie, Lizzie, Mary, Theresia and Frances, and two brothers-in-law: Wendelin Bosch and Herman Jahner.
