Sylvia Huizenga, 82, of Linton, ND, died November 3, 2025 in a Bismarck Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 10:30am on Monday, November 10, 2025 at the Linton United Methodist Church with Pastor Marlin Sapp officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM with a prayer service at 6:00 PM on Sunday at the Sannes Feist Family Funeral Home, Linton. Interment will be held in the Linton Cemetery.
Sylvia Huizenga was born on September 9, 1943, to Josephine (Bootsma) and Harold Seymour. She grew up in Pollock, South Dakota, and graduated from Pollock High School in 1961. On June 28, 1963, Sylvia married Jerry Huizenga. The couple moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota, where Jerry attended UND Law School and Sylvia also took college courses. Sylvia earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of North Dakota on May 13, 1973. That same year, Sylvia and Jerry moved to Linton, North Dakota. Jerry began his law practice there, while Sylvia devoted her life to teaching and raising their two children, Holly and Jeremy. She taught kindergarten from 1980 to 1981, and then preschool at the Linton Lions Learning Center from 1982 until her retirement in 2012—a career that spanned over 30 years.
Sylvia's dedication to early childhood education touched countless young lives. Over the years, her own son and grandsons, Hunter and Harris, were among her students—memories she cherished deeply. Spending time with her grandsons as they grew up brought her great joy. She loved watching them at motocross races, where she would cheer, yell, and panic all at once. In recent years, she also enjoyed helping Hunter on the cattle ranch, a source of immense pride and happiness.
Sylvia was an active member of the United Methodist Church and had a strong, unwavering faith that guided her life.
She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Jerry; daughter, Holly; son, Jeremy (Amy); and grandsons, Hunter and Harris (Brooke) Huizenga. She is also survived by her brothers, Rick (Kathy) Seymour and Frank (Sonya) Seymour both of Pollock, SD and brothers-in-law, Don Quenzer and Kennard Wiki both of Aberdeen, SD.
Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Bonnie (Kennard) Wiki and Sandra (Don) Quenzer and brother, Jerry Seymour.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Sanford Cancer Center; Dr. Wos and nurses; Sanford Neurology; Dr. Szymczak and nurses; and Bismarck Cancer Center, Dr. Reynolds and nurses. Your compassionate care and dedication gave Sylvia and her family two precious years, and they will be forever grateful for your kindness and professionalism throughout her journey.
Thank you to our friends, family and neighbors who offered kind words, hugs, support and love over the past few days and weeks as we prepared to say Goodbye, and now mourn the loss of our Mother, Grandma, Sister, Aunt and beloved Wife, Sylvia.
"Our hearts are empty, but we are blessed to have loved you."
