Tony M. Holzer, 93, of Linton, North Dakota, died peacefully on August 22, 2023, at Linton Hospital Swing Bed unit with his wife of 74 years by his side. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2023, at 10:00 AM at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Linton. Visitation will be held Friday, August 25, 2023, from 5:00-7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at Sannes Feist Family Funeral Home, Linton. Tony will be laid to rest at St. Anthony Catholic Church cemetery in Linton following the funeral service.
Tony was born on December 6, 1929, to Michael and Elizabeth (Mastel) Holzer, at the family farm northeast of Hague, ND, the fourth of 16 children. He grew up on a small grain and dairy farm while attending elementary school in Hague in Emmons County, ND. On November 9, 1948, Tony married Rose Marie Gefroh at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, rural Hague, ND. Tony and Rose eventually purchased the family farm from his parents in 1951 and operated it until 1987, when their son Gerard purchased the farm from his parents. After Gerard's passing in 1995, his grandson, Tony Goldade acquired the family farm. Tony and Rose moved to Linton, ND while continuing the farming operation in 1978. His daughter, Geraldine and her husband Michael Goldade operated the dairy business on the farm from 1977 until 1987.
He served on many service organizations throughout his lifetime. As a School Board member of Odessa District #9 Elementary School, rural Hague, he was instrumental in the consolidation and relocation of several section schools to one central location and assisted in the administration and commencement of a bussing program for area farm families' children. He served as a bus driver for many years. While a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Tony served as a Knight with the Hague Knights of Columbus Council, transferring to St. Anthony Church fraternal service order upon his move to Linton, eventually retiring as a 4th Degree Grand Knight. He also served as a board member of the Mid-America Dairymen, Inc. organization and National Farmers Organization advocating and serving his fellow farmers for many years.
Tony was a talented carpenter, offering his time and talent where and when needed, at his church, school, K of C Hall, Senior Center or neighbor's and family, he also enjoyed travelling, camping, card playing, golfing and visiting friends and family throughout his lifetime. His children and grandchildren will treasure their state quarter collections from Grandpa forever.
Tony is survived by his wife, Rose, of 74 years, Prairie Rose Assisted Living Center in Linton and his children, Anthony (Elsie) of Linton, Geraldine (Michael) Goldade, rural Wishek, ND, and Bernadette (Donald) Purser of Bella Vista, AR; daughter-in-law, Connie Gaebe, Bowman, ND; 11 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; brother Gene (Pat) Holzer, Mandan, ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 11 infant brothers and sisters, brothers Paul, Charles, Michael; son Gerard, grandson Brian Holzer, son-in-law Bruce Hendrickson, father in-law Marcus Gefroh, mother in-law Helen (Marquart) Gefroh and several brothers and sisters-in-law.
