Vera M. Schnabel, 87, formerly of Pollock, SD, died December 27, 2012 in the Strasburg Care Center. Funeral services will be held at 10:30am Monday, December 31, 2012 at Pollock Memorial Presbyterian Church, Pollock, SD with Rev. Floyd Haan officiating. Burial will be in Spring Valley Cemetery. Vera was born August 20, 1925 on a farm northwest of Pollock, SD, the daughter of William and Maude (Bachelder) McKay. She attended school at the McKay School northwest of Pollock. At the age of thirteen, Vera moved to California with her maternal grandparents. She continued her education in California. Vera graduated from the Benjamin Franklin High School in Los Angeles, CA. In 1943, she returned to Pollock where she met and married Roland Elmer Schnabel on May 19, 1944. Vera taught at the Glan Avon School from 1943 to 1944. Vera also worked for Harold Carlsons Super Value, Borr's Store, Nutrition Site and at the Pollock School on the Green Thumb Program. Vera worked into her 70's and then retired, but continued to live in Pollock. She entered the Good Samaritan Center in Herreid in 2010. She has been a resident of the Strasburg Care Center since July of 2012. Vera was a member of the Jr. Matrons Club and American Legion Auxiliary for more than 40 years. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: Gordon and Adeline Schnabel, Stanton, ND and Duane and Karen Schnabel, Pollock, SD; two daughters and son-in-law: Sandy and Larry Sutton, Brookings, SD and Sherry Mundt, Aberdeen, SD; twelve grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; fifteen great -great grandchildren; one brother, Burdette McKay, Clifton, CO; and a sister, Alyce Renner, Clifton, CO. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1992; one granddaughter, Stacey Sutton and three brothers: Ken, Don and Charlie in infancy.
