Viola Schumacher, 94, of Bismarck, passed away surrounded by her family on August 7 ^th , 2022. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 11 ^th at 10:30 AM at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic church in Strasburg, with Fr. Paul Eberle and Father Shannon Lucht as co-celebrants. Visitation will be held on August 10 ^th from 5-7 PM with Vigil/Rosary service beginning at 7:00 PM at Sts. Peter & Paul, Strasburg. Burial will be held at Sts. Peter & Paul cemetery in Strasburg. Viola was born on July 23, 1928 to Peter and Elizabeth (Schumacher) Mattern.  She was raised and educated through eighth grade, at a rural country school. Then graduated from St. Benedict High School in 1946. She married Alois Wikenheiser on October 29 ^th , 1947. To this union eleven children were born. Viola was active in church and school activities. She was a charter member of St. Mary's Society and Catholic Daughters. She was also a member of the Foresters and a Hospice caretaker, as well as a Communion Minister for 20 years.

Alois passed away on September 19, 1997 after 50 years of marriage.  They had retired from farming and had moved to Strasburg in 1986.

Viola enjoyed reading, needle work and playing cards, but most of all spending time with her children and grandchildren.  They were her Treasures.

Viola married Syl Schumacher in August of 2005, who passed away in 2014.  They enjoyed traveling during their marriage.

Viola is survived by four daughters:  Mary (Mike) Zimmerman of Minot, ND;  Elizabeth Wikenheiser of Strasburg, ND;  Sue (Rick) Rebel of Taylor, ND;  Judy (Ken) Stone of Pittsville, WI; and four sons: David (Marsha) Wikenheiser of Arlington, TN;  Kenneth (Elaine) Wikenheiser of Linton, ND;  Mark (Kim) Wikenheiser of Fairmont, MN;  Don (Deloris) Wikenheiser of Strasburg, ND.  Two sisters:  Bernice (George) Simek  & Lillian Aberle, and two brothers, Danny (Becky) Mattern & Henry (Julie) Mattern.  She is also survived by five step-daughters:  Pam (Bill) Bryan, Betty (Gary) Bruins, Sheila (John) Hager, Sandra (Damon) De Viller.  She was blessed with 35 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Along with many friends in her lifetime.

She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, one brother, Frank Mattern, two sisters, Sr. Katherine Mattern S.S.N.D. & Marianna (Mattern) Dosch, two daughters, Kathleen, Barbara and one son, John.  Also, one granddaughter, Kathleen (Stone) Sullivan, one great-granddaughter, Ridley Geinert, and one step-daughter, Lora (Lowell) Workin.
